The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel is seeking a creative and public-service-driven editor to lead our new neighborhoods initiative, a grant-funded pilot project launching in early 2025. This editor will lead a team that will pioneer a listen-first approach to community journalism in Wisconsin's largest newsroom. With unprecedented grant support from major foundations in the community, this team will launch in three Milwaukee neighborhoods. In addition to three neighborhood-specific reporters, the team will include a photojournalist. Our aim is to add an engagement specialist as additional grant funding becomes available. We need an editor who is savvy, organized and passionate, with an innovative spirit and mindset - someone who is ready to listen, help reporters make connections in neighborhoods and shape an effort to create distinctive journalism. This team will elevate neighborhood voices by positioning its journalists as helper figures who will inform and empower residents, amplify their voices and explore solutions to the problems they see. And will have the opportunity to partner with journalists across our award-winning newsroom. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, an award-winning news organization in Wisconsin and part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a full-time visual journalist, who is skilled in video, photography and social media to join our digital-first news team. We want someone who understands the powerful role visuals storytelling plays in reaching new audiences and who is committed to high-quality journalism at every level. As we work to expand our video offerings, we are looking especially for someone skilled in and comfortable with producing video content using a variety of approaches (packages to support stories, live coverage, etc.) and fluent in social media platforms, such as TikTok, YouTube and Instagram. The successful candidate will have an envelope-pushing attitude and understand how to tell a story visually that resonates on these platforms- as well as being able to tackle still images, often on the same assignment. Our visual journalists must be able to move seamlessly between high school and professional sports, daily local news and deep investigations, community festivals and national entertainment events. The successful candidate must have the ability to collaborate with reporters and editors to produce compelling storytelling about the people and places of Wisconsin. The candidate will collaborate with journalists at the Journal Sentinel, USA Today Network-Wisconsin and USA Today Network Photo and Video Team on special projects, tentpole coverage and breaking news. Responsibilities: * Creates quality visual storytelling using photography, videography and text that informs, entertains and engages our audience. * Experiments with video for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other emerging platforms. * Experience using video editing software, such as Adobe Premiere, and comfort using streaming and audio technology. * Uses audience metrics to assist in making coverage decisions. * Collaborates and connects with the community through visual storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.) * Works with editors and other journalists to evaluate what works and what doesn't and develops ongoing plans to satisfy audience needs. * Projects include a mix of daily local news coverage and longer-term enterprise projects or series. Requirements: * Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism, photography or an equivalent combination of education and experience. * Experience with multimedia storytelling techniques on multiple platforms. * Exceptional core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography and videography). * Ability to use basic and advanced computer programs, including but not limited to video editing software including Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop and Photo Mechanic. * Deep understanding of and curiosity about competition for our customers' time and money. * Self-motivated and self-directed. * Strong industry knowledge. * Organizational skills. * Understanding of social media and how to respond and engage fan base on digital platforms. * Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities. * Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment. * Works collaboratively within a cross-functional environment. * Must embrace peer-to-peer feedback and training. * Applies innovative, creative thinking to support the company's goals. * Writing, spelling, grammar, AP style. * Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct. * This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law. Milwaukee Magazine has Editorial Internship positions available for Summer 2025! We seek journalists with a commitment to accuracy and detail as well as a knack for telling Milwaukee's stories to our 200,000-plus readers. You'll be doing plenty of fact-checking. You'll balance that with some writing for our print editions and our website, milwaukeemag.com. You'll also be involved in larger research projects. You'll sit in on - and participate in - brainstorming sessions that help decide the direction of the magazine's editorial content. And the only coffee you'll get is your own. This is a professional role. We take pride when former interns, having honed and expanded their skill set here, move on to full-time positions at newspapers, magazines or other communication jobs. In many cases, they've returned to our offices for full-time jobs or become regular freelance contributors.
