JOB SUMMARY:
Repair, recondition, weld, fabricate, service and prepare CAT and other Empire line allied machines and components for delivery. Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions and failures of machines, engines, machine systems and components. Work in adverse weather and other adverse situations presented by field working conditions. Accept all out-of-town assignments requiring extended overnight stays. Provide on-the-job training to helpers as assigned. Communicate, orally and in writing, information, instructions, and explanations to associates, clients and management regarding equipment conditions, problems, and recommendations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Diagnose and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, metallurgical and stress failures. Ask for assistance in cases where the diagnosis has not been made within four hours.
* Eliminate or recommend action to eliminate the source of the problem.
* Prepare inspection and appraisal reports.
* Comprehend and interpret sketches and diagrams including engineering drawings and blueprints.
* Plan and control repair jobs. Analyze client requirements and determine the scope of work.
* In advance of a service trip, arrange to take parts, tools, proper size welding rod or wire, technical publications and other material required to complete the job.
* At the job site, organize the job sequence, and arrange with the dispatcher for all sublet or component rework required. Direct and coordinate the work of assigned helpers to minimize waiting, idle time, and inefficiencies. Monitor and control job progress.
* Repair, recondition, weld, fabricate, and maintain equipment and components.
* Prepare equipment for delivery. Remove and install components and parts. Disassemble and reassemble components.
* Determine parts reusability in accordance with published reusability guidelines. Order replacements and arrange for repairs.
* Service and maintain equipment (preventive maintenance), adjust (tune up), and test mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems, and components.
* Operate welding equipment. Perform arc welding, air arc, gas welding and cutting in vertical up, flat and overhead positions using correct temperatures and procedures for the type of material being welded.
* Works safely at all times. Adheres to all applicable safety policies. Complies with all company policies, procedures, and standards.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Learn and use Empire and CAT procedures and systems.
* Prepare Service Reports.
* Maintain company equipment. Report repair or replacement needs to the supervisor.
* Make warranty recommendations to supervision via job closing questionnaire.
* Maintain good client relations. Assist the client in making repair or replacement decisions. Explain the causes of equipment operating difficulties and failures to clients and the corrective action necessary to prevent them. Handle all client concerns with tact and diplomacy.

Role Overview
The role of Welder/Fitter includes construction of various fabricated parts and assembly from engineered prints by cutting, fitting, and welding. Is responsible for taking cut and bent materials and fitting them to the correct dimensions, tacking, and moving to the welding team.

Welds on the ground level, above ground and below ground, in any required position.
Chips peens and grinds material to prepare for welding or finish.
Welds structural materials such as plates, sheets, girders, tanks, etc., occasionally involving uncommon structural metals or machine metals under close tolerances of heat application and workmanship.
Straightens materials by heat or flame.
Perform gouging and scarfing as needed.
Must take and pass welding test in accordance to AWS D1.1.
Receives instructions, prints, sketches and work orders.
Reads and interprets blueprints and plans the fitting operation.
Directs and assists in handling and spreading of material, assembling material into required relationships according to detail drawings; handling and placing detail material in assembly, placing bolts, drift pins and other fastening deceives in proper locations.
Lays out work lines or fits up jigs for positioning material when required; checks, squares, and scribes all detail connections.
Responsible for work conforming to drawings and notes thereon.
Cleans up material by grinding or chipping.
Burns and tack welds for assembly purposes. Burns, copes, bevels and straightens material. Does minor layout.
Spot paints for identification marks.
Moves material to and from the work area. Moves welding equipment to material when necessary. Positions component parts on a table held by a fixture or jib, tacking when required.
Maintain clean and organized work area.
Perform other routine duties per management direction.

Education/Training - Work Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), and/or 12 months of stable work experience. Must pass required weld test and fitter test.
Specialized Knowledge - Certificates & Licenses
Equipment Knowledge & Skills - use a variety of hand tools and welding equipment
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and blueprints.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
