University of Sioux Falls company history timeline

1883

Under the name of Dakota Collegiate Institute, secondary and collegiate programs began on September 8, 1883.

Founded in 1883, the University of Sioux Falls, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is a Christian, Liberal Arts University.

1889

In 1889, the Lutheran Normal School was built on four acres of land given by lawyer and land developer Richard F. Pettigrew, one of Sioux Falls’ founding fathers.

1923

Female students petition for a credit course in physical training, and by 1923 the physical education department is established.

1925

Although the college grew, the academy's enrollment declined, forcing it to close in 1925.

1929

Dakota Hall (renamed Meredith Hall in 1929), the campus' first building, is built for $16,000.

1931

With the 1931 merger of Grand Island College with what was still legally Sioux Falls University, the institution's official name became Sioux Falls College.

1967

In fact, Time magazine featured the college's growth in 1967.

1997

USF's longest-serving president, Doctor Mark Benedetto, led USF for nearly two decades, from 1997, across the turn of the century.

2012

In 2012, USF built a new Media Studies Center, created a new Music Technology lab for Music majors and added an IdeaLab for Entrepreneurial Studies majors.

2018

One of his first initiatives as president was to reset USF's undergraduate tuition price by $10,000 for the 2018-19 academic year.
