SUMMARY:
The role of a Paraeducator Tutor in the Native American | Alaskan Native Education program is to provide after school academic support for interested Native students, specifically in the subjects of ELA and Math. Tutors will be placed with students in their own building and meet with them for two hours per week on days predetermined by the Paraeducator and family.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Provide extra academic support in ELA, math, and other core subjects.
Assist students with homework, preparing for tests, and projects as recommended by classroom teacher.
Coordinate and communicate with classroom teachers to find out areas of focus and support instruction.
Guide and support students in subjects at their grade level.
Communicate with parents about work completed.
Regularly update Native American | Alaskan Native Support Specialist with status of tutoring.

Work one-on-one without direct supervision.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Rainier Scholars - Tacoma launched in late spring 2021 and welcomed its first cohort during the summer of June 2022. The Rainier Scholars - Tacoma Summer Science Teacher facilitates the educational success of students of color (primarily lower income with no college graduate in the family) who will enter 5th or 6th grade in the fall of 2025. Through intensive classroom instruction and academic enrichment opportunities, the Science Teacher prepares scholars for rigorous middle and high school honors programs in public schools. We are currently hiring science teachers for our rising 5th and 6th graders. Rainier Scholars - Tacoma teachers seek to accomplish the following three goals in curriculum, instruction, and assessment:
Exposure to challenging content that will be present in rigorous academic settings;
Development of advanced skills that will allow students to perform at top levels;
Integration of cultural identity and resiliency themes relevant to the journey of a Rainier Scholar.
In summer science classes, students practice asking questions and making predictions using scientific knowledge and real-world understanding, reading and evaluating scientific texts and evidence, and carrying out scientific inquiry to test predictions and analyze results.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct classroom instruction daily, from 6/30-8/5/2025, leading three sections of students (approx. 1:15 teacher-to-student ratio) in a discussion-based, seminar-style classroom environment.
Two staff/teacher planning days (tentatively scheduled for 6/26 & 6/27 with the possibility of up to five hours of additional prep time prior to planning days).
Support students individually and in small groups during “office hours.”

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in regular school buildings located throughout the district. Ability to sit or stand for prolonged period of time; use of fingers, hands and arms; operate a motor vehicle, and tolerance of loud noises and physically demanding situations are all required. The employee must lift and/or move 25 to 50 pounds and may assist students with greater weight when required to intervene in student safety issues. * Willingness to attend and actively participate in the annual two- to three-night science and math field trip (NatureBridge) as part of the instructional program.
