New York State Dept Of State trade specialist job description

Minimum Qualifications Successful completion of a NYS two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) or NYS two-year plumbing training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent plumbing two-year training or apprenticeship program; * OR four (4) years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled journey-level plumber which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship training in plumbing or training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of ?C? or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

Duties Description As a Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter), you would perform journey level plumbing and steamfitting work and frequently supervise others in the installation, alteration and repair of pipes, fittings and fixtures of heating, ventilating, heating control, water, and drainage systems, according to specifications and plumbing codes.
Job Requirements:

* Working knowledge of methods, material, tools and equipment used in the craft or crafts to which assigned.
* Working knowledge of applicable standards and plumbing and electrical code regulations.
* Working knowledge of the rules and regulations of the facility governing the activities of State wards.
* Ability to use the tools, machines, equipment and material of the craft or crafts to which assigned.
* Ability to train and supervise others.
* Ability to plan and lay out work and diagnose problems.
* Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, architectural blueprints and specifications.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

What You Will Do:

+ II. The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

Specialists perform multiple mechanical, electrical and/or construction duties while specializing in at least two of the following: Plumbing, Electrical, Electronics, Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning and Carpentry.

+ Performs journey level work in assigned trades. Analyzes and evaluates equipment, troubleshoots problems and performs repairs on various equipment systems, such as, vacuum, medical gas and control air, plumbing, heating ventilation and air conditioning and controls, electrical distribution and electronics.

+ Organizes and coordinates the technical maintenance or construction work and installation services rendered by skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled workers assigned to a multi trade work team.

+ Prepares estimates of time, labor and materials. Ensures that assigned projects adhere to time and cost estimates. Monitors work on site and notifies supervisor of problems, scheduling or deadline issues.

+ Participates in ordering and maintaining inventory and records on all assigned equipment and vehicles, as needed, in accordance with departmental procedures. Documents maintenance of all equipment and vehicles.

+ Prepares requisitions and obtains materials needed to complete assigned projects. Ensures cost effective use of materials allocated

+ Maintains knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and concepts including the ability to properly document maintenance activities. Trains mechanics to perform preventive maintenance properly.

+ Maintains direct communication with Multi-Trade Team Leaders and other department personnel regarding job status.

+ Maintains work areas so that they are in compliance with safety, sanitation and security standards at all times. Reports injuries and accidents in accordance with departmental procedures.

What You Need to Be Successful:

1. High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.2. Work experience in one of the following areas: Electrical, Plumbing, Steamfitter, HVAC, carpentry or a certification in one of the listed fields from an appropriate technical school.3. Four years of experience in the primary trade. Two years valid technical experience in the secondary area of expertise with the ability to perform quality workmanship in accordance with accepted standards.4. No experience required if entering Skilled Trades Apprenticeship Program.
