    New City Kids is a place where children and teens come to experience love, life and transformation. Our goal is to help children understand their God given value. Not only do we expect children and teens to be leaders; we train for it. All teens who come to New City Kids are given extensive training in leadership and other life skills. All teens are invited to become involved in our various worship bands, professional visits, performing arts opportunities and small groups. Our hope is to be able to walk the road of life with a child from age 6 to 18 and set them on a path of life transformation that will stay with them long after their last day at New City Kids. THE AFTER SCHOOL CENTER (ASC) During the regular school year, New City Kids operates an after school center that includes an art and music component as well as academic support. Children are given the opportunity to choose classes based on their interests (keyboards, drums, bass, ESL, etc.) For one hour, students attend their class; for a second hour, they complete homework with an assigned tutor. Tutors are coached by New City Kids adult staff, while teen performing arts teachers are taught by a professional musician once a week in both music and music teaching. SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES TUTORS Spend 30-45 minutes greeting the children and playing organized activities with them as they enter the ASC. Participate in “community time” from 3:30-4:00 doing tasks that staff assign to you, including singing with kids, encouraging kids to participate and cleaning snack tables. Work with groups of 4-5 children for an hour at a time helping them complete their homework; this is not doing their homework for them, but actively leading them through each assignment, asking questions and listening until they get the answers for themselves. Check their homework to make sure it is complete and accurate. Clean up the classrooms after the children leave. TEACHERS (MUSIC & ACTIVITY) Participate in “community time” from 3:30-4:00 doing tasks that staff assign to you, including singing with kids, encouraging kids to participate and cleaning snack tables. Prepare activities and lesson plans for assigned classes. Facilitate group activities and projects in classes that foster children mastering concepts and promote a positive community at New City Kids. Use the points system well to maintain strong order and discipline in the classroom keeping the children focused and busy at all times. Teach curriculum developed by adult staff/master teacher to both the advanced and beginner keyboard, drum, and guitar classes. Apply musical concepts in ways that go beyond the written curriculum assignments. Prepare children for their regular performances by determining what their needs are and adapting your lesson's to individual's needs. QUALIFICATIONS TUTORS Initiative- Willingness to be engaged, ask questions, listen, and lead the child as they do their homework. Academics - Be an upstanding student who consistently gets A's and some B's in math, reading, and science. Teaching ability - Capable of breaking down difficult concepts into small parts and communicating those small steps well to children. Responsibility - Able to accept responsibility for mistakes without passing blame on to others. Good attitude - Comes to ASC everyday willing to work, regardless of mood; cheerful and respectful towards both children, peers, and adults. Enjoys children - Must enjoy working with children ages 6 - 12. TEACHERS Follow directions - Willingness to always follow instructions and directions from both adult leaders as well as other teen leaders.
