THE AFTER SCHOOL CENTER (ASC) During the regular school year, New City Kids operates an after school center that includes an art and music component as well as academic support. Children are given the opportunity to choose classes based on their interests (keyboards, drums, bass, ESL, etc.) For one hour, students attend their class; for a second hour, they complete homework with an assigned tutor. Tutors are coached by New City Kids adult staff, while teen performing arts teachers are taught by a professional musician once a week in both music and music teaching. SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES TUTORS Spend 30-45 minutes greeting the children and playing organized activities with them as they enter the ASC. Participate in “community time” from 3:30-4:00 doing tasks that staff assign to you, including singing with kids, encouraging kids to participate and cleaning snack tables. Work with groups of 4-5 children for an hour at a time helping them complete their homework; this is not doing their homework for them, but actively leading them through each assignment, asking questions and listening until they get the answers for themselves.
