Job Description:
Assists surgeon with procedures related to the care of patient of all ages during surgical intervention.
Assists in the coordination of treatments with other disciplines.
Provides basic patient assistance.
Connects patients to clinical equipment as needed.
Practices aseptic techniques while preparing for surgery including scrubbing, applying surgical gown, gloving, draping and setting up instrument table.
Actively participates in surgical Time and out and operationg room briefing according to the universal protocol.
Identifies correct surgical site with the circulating registered nurse and surgeon before incision of operative procedures.
Maintains an accurate account of supplies including sponges, needles and instruments.
Verifies count with the circulating nurse at end of procedure.
Prepares, identifies and verifies all specimens obtained during the surgical procedure.
Disposes of linens, needles and sharps in appropriate containers.
Assesses wounds and applies or changes sterile dressing as instructed by the registered nurse.
Maintains and documents universal precautions.
Initiates emergency procedures.
Participates in the admission and discharge process.
Performs billing as appropriate for services rendered or equipment used.
Participates in on-call rotations of operating room.
Acts as a preceptor for students assigned to the surgical unit.
Adheres to all policies, protocols and standards of care.
Performs quality control monitoring.
Performs additional duties including specimen collection, pleure-vac and traction set up, patient transport and post-mortem care.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure
Scrubs, gowns, and gloves self and members of the surgical team
Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure and ensures they are in good working condition
Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior to the operation and before incision is closed
Assists with draping sterile field
Passes instruments, retractors and suture etc., to surgeon during procedure

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sit up to 1 hour per day. Stand for up to 8 hours per day; possibly 6 hours at a time. Walk up to 8-10 hours per day; up to 2 hours at a time. Continuously required to use manual dexterity for handling and twisting/turning. Consistently lift and carry objects up to 10 pounds; frequently lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds; frequently push objects up to 100+ pounds (i.e., camera carts, microphones, storage carts, etc.). Frequently stoop and bend. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Must have the ability to move and respond quickly. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision. Depth perception necessary. Ability to tolerate visual monotony.

NJ Requirement: Certification required upon hire.
PA Requirement: Certification required upon hire, unless new graduate.

Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision.
Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies own skill in using equipment correctly.
Utilize knowledge of normal/abnormal anatomy and physiology, anticipates and responds to needs of surgeons by requesting instruments/supplies based on procedure and case progress.
Education Qualifications
Completion of a formal, structured program for Surgical Technology

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $52.62 - $59.26 per hour

Purpose:
Participates in an expanded role of perioperative First Assisting. Responsibilities:
