Offenders vary from high-risk to low-risk and require effective supervision strategies, case planning, and individual case management.
This job is characterized by significant role modeling, coaching, reinforcement of pro-social behaviors, teaching pro-social skills and decision making to staff. This position ensures that each employee is proficient in areas necessary for job performance and that an environment conducive to professional growth and development is provided for employees within the CPPO's purview. The CPPO must hold staff accountable for workload and case management. This position requires the ability to establish an appropriate course of action to ensure completion of assigned duties within given time frames.
The CPPO must be able to work a flexible schedule which includes 8-5 and respond at any time to emergency calls as unit caseloads demand. The CPPO will also frequently need to analyze a situation and respond immediately to crisis situations or provide a solution. The CPPO must be available twenty-four hours a day, creating the need for development and often independent implementation of unique control mechanisms. The person in this position may be assigned an active caseload which could require second shift hours. They may also be required to serve on EHA response team which includes on-call status and the need to respond to EHA violations.
Position requires the ability to target offenders' needs to ensure quality supervision and appropriate swift and certain responses to noncompliance. The CPPO must have demonstrated ability to maintain a calm and rational composure when dealing with difficult situations and individuals and exhibit the ability to focus on the task at hand. Position also requires the ability to develop professional alliances and establish and maintain effective working relationships with officers, offenders, judicial officials, law enforcement officers, community agencies, the public, and co-workers. It is vital that the position holder is able to express themselves clearly in oral and written form.
The CPPO must possess the skills necessary to qualify annually with a firearm and unarmed self-defense, complete CPR annually, and be indirectly exposed to O.C. Pepper Spray as part of a training exercise.
Chief Probation/Parole Officers must reside within 30 miles of the county of assignment within 90 days of their start date. This position is certified by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
