Our CEO and the rest of our senior leadership team have done a fantastic job of not just defining our core values, but then helping all departments flesh out what those values mean in what we do. It is especially important in hiring new employees to really probe whether a new employee would match the core values. Our three key things we look for are folks who are Design Thinkers, Humble Experts, and Caring Heros. You'd be amazed how quickly it becomes evident in interviews that a given employee is / is not one of these three. Then, you have to rigorously defend and protect your culture. Sometimes you hire folks that end up not having these values, and they can very quickly destroy your culture, even if they're "high-performers", and you have to have enough transparency and enough of a commitment to culture to recognize this and nip it in the bud --- and that is really, really hard, and takes a lot of faith.
