The City of Wilmington, Ohio, is seeking to build a candidate pool for the position of full-time Patrol Officer within the Wilmington Police Department. The Patrol Officer enforces laws and ordinances, provides for public safety, regulates traffic, controls crowds, prevents crime, and arrests violators within an assigned area. This position is subject to oversight and certification by the Civil Service Commission. Commission rules mandate that applicants must first pass a written examination with a minimum score of 70% to progress in the hiring process. Physical Abilities Examination: (Friday May 2 nd 2025 - Sunday May 4 th 2025) The test is designed to evaluate physical ability to perform the duties of a Patrol Officer. You will be scored on a pass/fail basis, based on the time, number of repetitions, etc. required for you to complete the test. As candidates are certified for consideration throughout the year, periodic Physical Abilities Testing (PAT) will be conducted. The standards for the components of the exam (which are based on age and gender). AGILITY TESTING REQUIREMENTS The Physical Agility Test is broken down into three events: One minute of pushups; One minute of sit ups; and a 1.5 mile run. Each event is further broken down into age groups (20 to 29 years of age or 30 to 39 years of age) as well as by gender (male and female). On the following chart, the minimum number of repetitions for the pushups and the sit ups for each group is indicated. The maximum number of minutes and seconds allowed for the 1.5 mile run for each group is also noted. Background Investigation: Background investigation and evaluation may include interviews with present and previous employers. Neighbors and family may be contacted as part of the investigation. In addition, a check of Local and State Police and FBI records, both adult and juvenile, and Bureau of Motor Vehicle records will be made. The background test also includes review of sealed and expunged records. Unsatisfactory findings in one or more of these areas may be cause for removal from the Civil Service eligibility list. Conviction of a felony is absolute grounds for removal from the list. Any applicant convicted of a felony will be removed from the eligible list and will receive no further consideration. There are also misdemeanor convictions that would result in the removal of an applicant from the eligibility list. Psychological Evaluation: A psychological evaluation to determine the applicant's suitability to perform all aspects of the job will be conducted. Each applicant may be required to take several written examinations. These, along with the results of the background investigation, will be submitted to one or more psychologist(s)/psychiatrist(s) who will interview the candidates. All records of the psychological and background examinations will be made available to the Civil Service Commission. Age 21 or older. Private Security Officer's Training Course with Firearms Course with semiautomatic pistols, or Police Officer Basic Academy, both must meet requirements and be sanctioned by Ohio Police Officer Training Commission. Background check that is acceptable to the Department Director. Private security officer equivalent obtains a Cleveland Commission to carry firearms within 120 days of employment. Achieve and maintain department's qualifying firearms score for duration of employment. Maintain minimum skill-based competencies as identified by the department during term of employment. Possesses a valid Ohio driver's license and ability to obtain & maintain eligibility of insurability as determined by the MHS insurance carrier's requirements to operate MHS vehicles. Reliable transportation to report to alternate sites during shift. Knowledge of the concepts/processes of laws of arrest, search & seizure, use of deadly force and physical security systems. Understanding of the permitted actions appropriate to the commission held. High level of integrity required for handling sensitive/confidential MHS data and resources. Advanced communications skills to include following de-escalation verbal strategies and written grammar, etc. to produce professional reports and documents. Ability to interact effectively with a wide range of cultural, ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preferred: Experience in law enforcement or security enforcement in healthcare. Physical Requirements: A psychological evaluation from a MetroHealth System designated Psychologist which demonstrates satisfactory psychological fitness commensurate with the role of an armed officer. Applicants who begin employment after 11/1/2014 will be required to pass a physical agility and fitness test that is based on essential job requirements within six months. Employees must pass the test annually to maintain employment. Must maintain adequate physical fitness level to perform essential physical aspects of the job effectively with minimized risk to self and others. Full body motion, physical strength, and stamina sufficient to chase, apprehend, and/or subdue individuals. Approximately 2 minutes continuous physical conflict on an occasional basis. Physical ability to run in spurts and ascend or descend multiple flights of steps quickly. Drag loads of up to 200 lbs. on a rare basis, lift loads up to 88 lbs. on an occasional basis and lift loads of up to 40 lbs. on a regular basis. Jumping, climbing, and crawling on an occasional basis. Standing/walking up to 4 hours walking without rests, twice during an eight-hour shift. Walk approximately 5 miles per shift. Able to drive in a vehicle for extended periods of time, 60 minutes or more continuously. Manual dexterity & coordination sufficient to perform duties. Have uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 in both eyes, corrected to 20/40 or better, with peripheral vision & color vision consistent with the occupational demands of the job. The Auxiliary Patrol Officer shall be responsible for his/her assigned duties and shall have the authority under City of Oberlin Ordinance (§ 141.12) to issue warnings and citations for violations of City Ordinances related to motor vehicle parking regulations, garbage and refuse regulations, bicycle operations regulations and animal prohibitions. Auxiliary Patrol Officer shall be committed to the mission, vision and values of the City and demonstrate such through ethical conduct, community stewardship, individual initiative and responsive service. The Auxiliary Patrol Officer shall demonstrate leadership and technical skills through effective communication and collaboration, proper use of team resources, progressive decision-making, personal accountability and responsibility. Applicants must be able to respond and report for work within 20 minutes if called in to work an unscheduled assignment. Applicants must be able to work in an outdoor environment and in various weather conditions. Minimum Qualifications Requires the applicant to be 18 years of age or older. Must possess high school diploma or GED. Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Must pass oral interview, background check, physical and physiological examination. Ability to read, write and speak clearly. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Ohio driver's license. Must have good driving skills. Must successfully complete Lorain County Sheriff's Department Auxiliary Class within 12 months of appointment or upon hire have commensurate experience/training as determined by Police Department and/or Administration. Experience working with the public or in a position with public contact is highly desirable.
