Employment Standards

Option 1: Candidates who have already completed the National Test Network (NTN) examination may submit their results through NTN. The test must have been administered within one year of your submitted application. Candidates must meet the minimum scores of: Video (65), Reading (70), and Count (70); acceptance of NTN test scores are subject to verification with National Testing Network.

Option 2: Register yourself to participate in the National Testing Network "Law Enforcement" examination as soon as possible. There are three components to the written examination: Video Judgement, Reading, and Writing. The examination takes approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Upon completion of your examination, NTN will provide applicant scores to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office (Human Resources Bureau).
NOTE: We offer an alternative to taking the test with National Test Network. Applicants may submit their Peace Officer Standards and Training POST Entry-Level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) T-score notice at the time of application. The results must state a minimum T-score of 40.0 to be accepted. The PELLETB test results are valid from one year the date the test was taken. Applicants who wish to use scores from a PELLETB exam administered by another agency will have the opportunity to submit these results at a future date. In addition, if you prefer to take an in-person, pencil and paper examination, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office will administer a PELLETB exam. The PELLET B written exam will be administered on Friday, July 11, 2025, in Lompoc.
4. PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST (PAT) Pass/Fail: Upon passing the written exam, candidates will be invited to attend the Physical Agility Test. Candidates will be notified by email with instructions on the process and how to self-schedule. Candidates who successfully pass the PAT will be placed on the employment list. PAT exam date is Friday, July 11, 2025, in Lompoc.
The PAT is an important part of the Custody Deputy exam and can be physically demanding. Even if you are physically fit, we strongly advise that you begin pre-conditioning exercises in advabce to increase the probability of success on the day of the exam. For the actual exam, you must wear appropriate athletic footwear and clothing. You may want to wearrubber cleats for some parts, not all, of the PAT. You must pass all of the physical agility tests in order to qualify for further consideration.
Physical Agility Test consists as follows:
* 1.0 mile run in under 11:00 minutes
* 99-yard obstacle course in 25 seconds or less
* Maximum sit-ups in two (2) minutes
* Maximum push-ups in no time limit
* Maximum pull-ups in no time limit
ELIGIBLE LIST: Candidates must receive a passing score on the on the Written Examination to be placed on an employment list (the minimum passing scores will be converted to a percentage score of 70 percent). An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their name placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive an email notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.
VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS: Veteran's preference credit is applicable for this recruitment (5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans). To be eligible for this credit, you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of: (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or, (2) discharge from a military or veterans' hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or, (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act. No time limit exists for veterans with 30% or more disability.
To receive veteran's preference points, you must: (1) check the Veteran's Preference Points box on the employment application form, (2) submit a copy of your Form DD-214 and any supporting documentation with your online application or before the examination date, and (3) pass all phases of the Civil Service examination process. Description
The County of Mono is now hiring to fill a vacant Deputy Sheriff position. The vacant position will be Lateral hire, starting as a Deputy Sheriff I/II.
Under supervision, to perform law enforcement, crime prevention, and crime detection activities; to occasionally guard and supervise inmates in County Jail facilities; to act as a bailiff; may be assigned operations supervision. May be assigned to work as an undercover narcotics officer; may be assigned to train new deputy sheriffs; perform Coroner's investigations/duties and do related work as required.
This class is the journey-level sworn class in the Sheriff's series. Incumbents rotate through various assignments and are expected to learn and perform the full range of duties required and complete the applicable probationary period.
Examples of Duties
Perform a variety of assignments including that of Patrol, Bailiff, Civil Deputy, Crime-Scene Investigator, Identification Technician (photographer) and Deputy Coroner.
As a Civil Deputy, will be required to receive records and serve a variety of civil processes and to maintain the required records of processes filed and monies collected.
As a Bailiff, will discharge the Sheriff's duty to attend all sessions of the Superior Court, serving the Superior and Municipal Court Judges.
As a Crime Scene Investigator, upon assignment, assist in the initial investigation of reported crimes through detailed examination of a crime scene for evidence, photographing and collecting the same.
As an Identification Technician, will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the photography, laboratory and processing of evidence within Department capabilities.
Prepare report of arrests made, investigations conducted, and unusual incidents observed.
While on patrol, stop drivers operating vehicles in violation of laws; warn drivers against unlawful practices; issue citations and make arrests as necessary.
Serve warrants, subpoenas and civil documents.
Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Make independent decisions while working in the field.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions and regulations and department policies.

Knowledge of:
Basic rules and regulations of the Sheriff's Office and jail operation procedures.
Criminal and traffic laws with particular reference to apprehension, arrest, search and seizure, and the rules of evidence.

SHERIFF CADET DESCRIPTION Temporary Employees hired into the entry level, non-sworn Deputy Sheriff Cadet (trainee) position will be assigned to attend and participate in classes at the University of Akron/Summit County Sheriff's Office Police Academy ("Academy"). Candidates who meet department performance expectations and successfully pass the basic police academy or meet the requalification criteria will be sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff for Summit County in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between the Candidate, County of Summit and the Summit County Sheriff. While being a Cadet, candidates will, under general supervision, Cadet performs a wide variety of duties in assist Sheriff's Department personnel in accomplishing their activities. As Temporary Employees, Deputy Sheriff Cadets work approximately 24 hours per week, to a maximum of 1,248 hours per fiscal year. These hours are in addition to their Academy hours. Cadets may work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Required Qualifications:
Sheriff Deputy Cadet temporary employees are to attend and participate in classes at the University of Akron/Summit County Sheriff's Office Police Academy ("Academy")for approximately 24 hours a week for approximately 36 weeks; OR approximately 48 hours for approximately 16 weeks. Once all classes are completed at the Academy, upon passing the Ohio Peace Officer Training Exam, and if Cadet is otherwise qualified, the Sheriff will offer him/her a full-time peace officer position, unless the Sheriff has reason to believe the Cadet will not be successful given the position's duties. Passing the Ohio Peace Officer Training Exam is an absolute requirement to receiving an offer of full-time employment, but is not considered part of the temporary employment. Cadet will agree to work a minimum of two (2) years for the Sheriff.

Job Duties:
Duties In all functions of this position the Employee must maintain confidentiality of client data, information, and records.

Perform assigned duties and responsibilities while attending the basic academy which may include test taking, physical training, defensive tactics, weapons, scenario, etc. training and examinations. The Sheriff Deputy Cadet will receive basic training that complies with the standards set by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (O.P.O.T.A). The basic training program includes approximately 864 hours of academic classes, hands-on training, and physical conditioning. Knowledge-based training includes, but is not limited to: Criminal Law, Patrol Procedures, Cultural Diversity, Investigative Procedures, Report Writing, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Leadership, Ethics, Community Policing, Police Vehicle Operations, Traffic Enforcement, Accident Investigation, Handling Emotional Situations and First Aid/CPR. Hands-on training includes, but not limited to weapons training, role playing scenarios, patrol procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and arrest and control techniques. Recruits are required to complete 80 hours of instruction in defensive tactics which includes ground control, baton training, control holds and take downs. The physical conditioning program consists of specific performance tests and a program of physical training. The training includes running (distance and speed), push-ups, sit-ups, weight training and calisthenics. During the course of their work, the Sheriff Deputy Cadet will be exposed to potentially dangerous and adverse conditions. The Sheriff Deputy Cadet must be willing and able to work in emergency situations, confined spaces, and intense life-threatening conditions. Cadets will be exposed to persons whose actions may place them in harm's way. Cadets will be exposed to bodily fluids, fumes, moving objects, and noise. Candidates must be physically able to work in circumstances requiring running, jumping, walking, crawling, kneeling, climbing, stooping, pulling and moderate lifting. The Deputy Sheriff Cadet must be willing and able to work in inclement weather conditions and able to work irregular work hours and able to work all shifts. The Sheriff's personnel are considered "essential" or "required" personnel and shall respond when directed to do so, even with little advanced notification.
