How Did You Land Your First Sharepoint Administrator Job

Sharepoint Administrator

I became a SharePoint administrator by accident, but a lover of the application and an enthusiastic evangelist by choice.

Around 2003-04 I was working at the WA State Ferries as a technical writer and doing research on newer document control options. I found SharePoint, which was a fairly new platform. I was able to check out a trial, which only made me more interested in learning everything about it. While my team didn't select it, I was absolutely fascinated with the application, especially its organizational capabilities, and became determined to work with it eventually.

In 2006 I started at Starbucks as a business analyst in the IT PMO. Not long before I left, I was finally able to convince my team to start using SharePoint as our project document management system. I dove in and learned everything I could about SharePoint and administering sites from the front-end (no access to the server side of things). I set up our sites, trained all the project and program managers on the team (and a few outside our team), and became the resident expert in basic SP document management within a few short months. On my departure I left a comprehensive guide I had written that covered the specifics of the sites I had set up so that anyone could take over the administration of the sites easily.

Once I left Starbucks I ended up at AT&T. AT&T is where I was able to fulfil my love of working with SharePoint and truly become a SP administration expert! Within three months of starting work, I convinced my boss to let me take their single, barebones, folder-based library (no better than a shared drive) and turn it into a set of functional libraries with proper metadata and workflow automation. I was so successful setting up SharePoint systems and processes for my team of ~50 writers and editors, that within nine months managers from four other teams approached my boss asking if I could help make SP work for them like it did for us. My boss happily agreed, and I thoroughly enjoyed working with the other teams on their specialized sites and needs and getting them up and running! I supported all four teams until I left AT&T eight years later. Besides normal libraries and metadata for document management, I also created SP based automated systems and processes, such as a work request intake, estimate, and tracking system, a time-against-projects tracking system that rolled-up to upper management, and some project specific automations and workf
