The Lenexa Police Department accepts certified police officers from other cities, counties, and states through our lateral officer hire program. We define lateral officers as those who are currently certified as police officers in their jurisdiction. The certification must meet the training standards set forth by the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center (KLETC). If accepted and hired, you will directly enter LPD's Field Training Program and can forego a Kansas Police Academy. If certified through another state, may be required to attend a 2-week reciprocity academy.

$1,300 annual ~ $50.00 per pay period secondary language stipend for those who pass a City of Lenexa proctored oral speaking proficiency test.

Position Summary & Responsibilities:
Supervises and maintains discipline and control of inmates at all times. Performs searches of inmates, persons, and physical areas in order to prevent and control contraband. Observes and monitors inmates, activities, and interactions while enforcing policies, rules, and regulations. Follows established security procedures in controlling visitor, staff, inmate, and vehicular traffic to prevent the admittance or exit of authorized persons and the introduction of contraband; and takes and reports periodic counts of inmates. Responds to emergency situations in accordance with appropriate contingency plans. Subject to regular rotation or post and/or shift assignment within the facility. Corrections Officers are required to weapons qualify under KDOC guidelines during initial training and on an annual basis. Corrections Officer IA's are evaluated on their ability to observe and recall inmate behavior, surroundings, and events; write clear and complete sentences; quickly respond to emergencies, climb stairs, and use physical force to subdue violent and resisting inmates; remain alert over long periods of time; remain calm during stressful situations; and interact with inmates and co-workers to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The incumbent must be capable of performing Essential Physical Functions. An initial 12-month probationary period is required for new Corrections Officers.

Education: High School Diploma, GED or Equivalent
Licensing & Certification: Valid Driver's License.
Minimum Qualifications: At least 18 years of age at the time of appointment, must pass a Criminal Background Check
Selection Process: Applicants selected for interview will be evaluated by an interview panel using performance/behavior-based interview questions. The interview panel will make recommendations to the Warden for final approval. A second interview may be conducted. Applicants will be subject to background check and criminal history investigation; must pass a drug screen and a TB test unless promoting, transferring, or demoting from another safety sensitive position within the same agency; and possess a valid Driver's License.

Security staff may be asked to assist with moving equipment, setting up signs, barricades, and fencing in support of our events.

The Correctional Counselor develops and implements programs within the unit to meet the individual needs of the inmates confined, to include individual as well as group counseling.
As part of the institution intake process (Admissions & Orientation), must interview newly admitted inmates.
The Correctional Counselor plays a key role in maintaining and enhancing the security of the unit and institution by their extensive contacts with the inmates.

Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff's correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.
Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
