This Transportation Security Officer position is located in Transportation Security Administration, Department of Homeland Security (DHS). As a Transportation Security Officer (TSOs) within Security Operations (SO), you will provide security and protection of air travelers, airports and aircraft in a courteous and professional manner. To qualify for the SV-D pay band (equivalent to the GS-5/6), you must meet one of the qualification requirements (A OR B) outlined below:
A. Experience: At least one year of full-time work experience in the security Industry, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician.
OR
B. Education: Have a high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED), High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) high school equivalency certificate.
Credit for experience is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Therefore, former Federal or Postal Service employees who are receiving a civilian retirement annuity may have their salary reduced by the amount of their pension, which could result in a biweekly net pay as low as zero dollars ($0.00) or a debt owed to the Federal Government.
TSO Dress and Appearance Responsibilities: TSOs must adhere to the current TSA dress and appearance requirements. For example, with the exception of half-inch diameter stud-style earrings, non-protruding ear gauges or spacers that match your skin and do not exceed one half-inch diameter, inconspicuous nose or tongue piercings that match your skin or tongue, body piercings may not be visible to the public. These requirements dictate if you have a tattoo that would be visible beyond the standard TSO uniform in areas such as the head and face including a partial tattoo that extends more than one inch beyond the upper neck or behind the ear, it could potentially render you ineligible for the position unless it was able to be covered at all times and not visible to the general public. Additionally, tattoos that are indecent, commonly associated with gangs, extremists, and/or supremacist organizations or that advocate sexual, racial, or religious discrimination, or have a negative impact on TSA's ability to carry out its mission must be covered at all times.
Work Schedules for Full-time Positions: Specific work shifts and schedules will be determined by the airport.
* Full-time positions require 40 hours per week;
* Full-time work consists of shift-work on any day from Sunday through Saturday, which may include irregular hours, nights, holidays, overtime, extended shifts and weekend shifts, changing shifts, and split shifts.
* A "split-shift" consists of any two work shifts, each lasting at least two (2) hours in one 24-hour period, with at least two (2) hours between work shifts.
Work Schedules for Part-time Positions: Specific work shifts and schedules will be determined by the airport.
* Part-time shifts generally range from 16-32 hours per week

Serves at fixed posts or patrols the installation on foot or in vehicles; responds to alarms, irregularities, and unusual or suspicious circumstances. Responds to calls for emergency assistance to include active shooter, suspicious persons, catastrophic events, scenes of crimes/natural disasters and enemy attacks, and makes apprehensions. Incumbent is required to perform specialized techniques, methods, and procedures to execute search and apprehension; counter terrorist operations; or counter violence posing a threat to public safety. As directed, acts as the on-scene commander for significant and catastrophic events. Performs traffic duty to include directing traffic and escorting dignitaries. Incumbent enforces pertinent administrative rules and regulations governing traffic control, parking, building, or other facility access, and breaches in physical security controls (locks, fences, gates, or other barriers). When enforcing rules and regulations established to accomplish the protective missions, security forces personnel control the movement of persons and protect lives and personal property in and around the identified Federal property. The incumbent carries out related duties such as, escorting persons and valuables; driving emergency vehicles; detecting and reporting potential fire and accident hazards; making preliminary checks of violations; and, preparing reports of incidents or security conditions.
(2) Serves as a Security Forces Dispatcher for the installation. Dispatches personnel and equipment to meet emergency situations. Monitors the locations of all posts, alarm systems, closed circuit television systems and telephone/radio networks. As required, coordinates with civilian police, fire, rescue and emergency units for assistance. Uses computerized information systems to direct patrols, record daily blotter information, and retrieve information through the FBI's National Crime Information Center System. Uses knowledge of the Security Forces Management Information Systems (SFMIS) to retrieve information and complete reports on the systems. Receives, records, and secures confiscated items and evidence. Assures witness statements are properly secured. Keeps reports and complaint records. Prepares shift activity reports. Interviews witnesses and suspects to obtain and verify information. Advises suspects of their rights. Receives and records radio, telephone, and personal messages and instructions involving emergencies, complaints, violations, accidents, and requests for information and assistance. Transmits messages and instructions to officers on patrol and dispatch officers to investigate complaints and assist in emergencies. Interprets directives and instructions and answers general inquiries. Maintains records and prepares reports covering activities and events occurring over the course of a shift.
(3) Performs the full range of Base Entry Controller and commercial vehicle inspection duties. Ensures individuals requesting access to the installation have the proper identification credentials before entering. Conducts random vehicle searches at the privately owned vehicle (POV) gates and conducts thorough searches of all vehicles at commercial gate. Performs random antiterrorism measures in accordance with applicable instructions. Performs over-watch duties as required by force protection conditions. Responsible for Issuing base entry passes (individual and vehicle), and conducts background checks on contractors. Operates vehicle arresting barriers as necessary.
(4) Performs the full range of duties for defending protection level resources (Patrol, Security Response Team (I-SRT & E-SRT). Defends installation personnel, equipment, and resources from hostile ground attack. Participates in tactical defense postures as a member of a quick reaction force to deny infiltration or attack. Verifies credentials to ensure only authorized personnel, vehicles, and equipment items are permitted in these areas and validates each person's need to access the area. Ensures visitors are informed of applicable security requirements. Operates, monitors, and assesses sensor systems for the area.

Campus Safety Officer Responsibilities
Provides high-level, professional and courteous service through interactions with the Bates community via personal contact, telephone service and timely radio dispatch services.
Responds to ALL routine and emergency calls for service (medical, fire alarms, and burglar alarms).
Assure equity, inclusion, access, and anti-racism as central to their work and the delivery of services to faculty, staff, and students.
Provides security escort and locks and unlocks buildings and offices as necessary.
Conducts vigilant patrols of campus and its surrounding area via car, bicycle and on foot in order to maintain a safe and secure college community.
Conducts Rental property checks as necessary.
Investigates incidents occurring on campus or in college owned property and completes detailed and accurate reports both verbally and in writing.
Maintains a thorough daily log of activities and assorted reports for each assigned shift.
Assists anyone in distress on campus.
Has parking and traffic control oversight to include ticketing and towing of vehicles as required.
Works with the Access Control Office of Campus Safety to issue the Bates Card to faculty, staff and students as needed. Maintain working knowledge of E-access system.
Conducts crime prevention, personal security programs, and security survey programs.
Performs dorm liaison officer duties.
Works closely with Bates EMS.

Dispatches all calls for service with emergency calls taking precedence using Security's two-way radio system.
Monitors the E-access System for alarms.
Performs data entry of information relevant to the functioning of Security.
Registers computers, bicycles, etc. for crime prevention.
Coordinates Campus Safety Officers with other agencies.
Responds to inquiries and furnishes information on campus activities, organizations, key personnel, administrative/academic offices and locations or transfers callers to offices which can provide information.
Completes and sends maintenance work order request forms.
Maintains various books such as criminal trespass, no contact, parking permits, etc.
