The Springfield College Department of Public Safety is a full-service police agency that serves the College Community and operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The shift will be determined by the needs of the department. Under general direction, the Police Officers works directly with Community Service Officers (CSO's), and assists personnel in Parking Services, the Dispatch Center, Transportation & Shuttles, Student Workers, Springfield College EMS, etc. Responsibilities The Officers perform a full range of police duties, which include but are not limited to: Prevention and detection Arrest Search and Seizure Traffic enforcement Crash investigation Maintaining public order Patrols will be conducted by cruiser, foot and bicycle, of all campus areas and surrounding jurisdiction. Must obtain a Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms (Class A Large Capacity) in accordance with Massachusetts General Law Chapter 140, Section 131. Must possess a Special State Police Officer (SSPO) Certification, or the ability to obtain one within 60 days. Candidate must maintain these certifications to remain a licensed police officer. Must be able to read, write and speak English. Must pass a background check and psychological evaluation. Must have valid driver's license. Essential Duties: * Patrol campus property in a vehicle or on foot, to provide security and control traffic. * Perform physical security checks of campus facilities, ensuring facilities are being used by appropriate personnel. * Respond to emergency and non-emergency request for assistance. Additional on call hours will be required as needed by the department over the full year (52 weeks).Connecticut College is a highly selective, private, coeducational liberal arts college located in southern New England. The Campus Safety Department is a 24/7 on campus operation. Under direct supervision, the officers maintain security of persons and property at Connecticut College. Using standard operating procedures as a guide for performing duties, the officers perform routine security and safety patrol duties, remain alert to emergency situations and provide first-line response, and emergency management. As part of our daily operations, all campus Safety Officers will complete rotating shifts in the Dispatch Center. The Dispatcher Center is the 24/7 Communications and Resource Center for the Connecticut College Department of Campus Safety for any services, incidents, or emergencies that occur on campus. General Duties and Responsibilities * Maintain a high level of professionalism, honesty and integrity * Be courteous and polite in all interaction with the community and perform all duties impartially * Enforce all College rules and regulations * Provide physical security of all college buildings, leased buildings, and property on and off campus * Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols to monitor and respond to security concerns * Ensure visible presence in key areas, including residential halls, academic/non-academic buildings and common spaces * Respond appropriately to emergency calls, conduct thorough preliminary investigations, assess situations, and assist or obtain necessary support services * Prepare detailed reports of all investigations, complaints and calls for service performed * Transport sick or injured students to the College Student Health Services when necessary * Recognize and report all unsafe conditions; correct problem or report to responsible personnel * Identify and remove any unauthorized person or vehicles from college property: including issuing parking tickets and moving violations * Provide access to Residence Halls and Academic Buildings when necessary Dispatch Responsibilities: * Receive and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls * Dispatch security personnel to incidents or locations as needed * Monitor security cameras and alarms * Maintain communication with on-duty officers * Coordinate with other campus departments in emergency situations * Track all activities of each shift: data entry of Daily Patrol Sheets/Activity logs. * Responsible for key control and maintaining the key log. * Submit work requests to Facilities Management for issues or problems identified during your shift. Education and Skills High school graduate with 2-5 years related experience needed; some college preferred. Must be able to write clear and concise reports, possess a valid Driver's License and have no prior criminal record; will be necessary to qualify in CPR and First Aid. JOB TITLE: Campus Safety Officer (Part-Time) DEPARTMENT: Campus Safety REPORTS TO: Director of Campus Safety / FTE: 0.5 FTE Schedule:(1st shift) 7:00am to 3:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. One additional day on either of the following days is required: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. Or (2nd shift) 3:00pm to 11:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays, and one additional day on either Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday. *Please specify which shift you are pursuing* Position Requirements: The duties and responsibilities of a Security Officer include, but are not limited to: Patrols, both on foot and in a security vehicle, to ensure safety and security in or around campus buildings, facilities, and areas adjacent to the school sites. Reports incidents of misbehavior to proper school authority; serves as a positive role model for students. Uses computers to send and receive email, write reports and other correspondence and to operate the door locking system. Directs campus visitors to destinations and prevents unlawful loitering. Provides security for parking areas. Exercise control only to the extent reasonably necessary to maintain order, protect property and protect the health and safety of students. Acts as liaison with Town Police and Fire officials. Uses Fire Alarm control panel and mass communication system in response to alarms and other emergencies. Qualifications: Ability to: Interface with students in a friendly, unemotional manner and work cooperatively with faculty and staff; ability to interpret rules and regulations; ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and fairly; ability to work effectively with students, faculty, administration, parents and staff. Able to push and/or pull a variety of tools and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds. Able to sustain strenuous manual labor for 8 hours. Mitchell College seeks a Campus Safety Officer who will play a key role in the safety and wellbeing of Mitchell College students, faculty, staff and property through the education and enforcement of College policies and procedures. Campus Safety Officers respond to calls for assistance including emergency and crisis situations, and provide other services to the College community. Campus Safety Officers are assigned to security details for Mitchell College athletic events and social functions and may be required to work evenings and weekends as operationally necessary. This position is considered “essential personnel” and will be required to work during emergencies and campus closures as directed. Responsibilities and Duties: Perform routine patrols of and through on-campus buildings and property utilizing various patrol methods including but not limited to vehicle, foot and bicycle patrols. Mediate arguments between individuals in a calm and composed manner. Manage belligerent individuals with an impartial approach to prevent injury to members of the community. Respond to requests for assistance with the following: Medical emergencies, on-campus accidents (personnel and vehicle) safety hazards, the physical plant and/or fire/security alarms Routine calls for assistance including safety escorts and lock-outs. Work as part of a Community Resource Team assigned to specific Residence Halls to work closely with the Campus Life Coordinators and Resident Assistants helping students with difficulties that arise. Investigate and report complaints and violations of college regulations as well as state and federal laws. Write incident reports and document violations of college policy and other events in the log book. Lock and unlock campus buildings and offices as required by Campus Safety policies. Enforce parking regulations and regulates vehicle and pedestrian traffic on campus. Collect and transport money, and may be responsible for Lost-and-Found articles. Campus Safety Officers work closely with members of the local police and fire departments on matters of mutual concern relating to the safety of the Mitchell College community. Other duties as assigned. Supervision: This position reports to the Director of Campus Safety and may supervise student officers as necessary. Required Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required At least six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working in an academic environment and/or with young adults is a plus. Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills. Ability to maintain confidential information and work independently with a high level of discretion Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in stressful situations. Current and valid driver's license (yearly driver's history check is required). Current First Aid and CPR certification is a plus, but training will be provided if the incumbent does not have such experience prior to the offer being made. Physical Demands: While performing this job, the Campus Safety Officer is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The Campus Safety Officer frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The Campus Safety Officer will occasionally be required to sit, climb, or balance, and stoop, kneel, and crouch. The Campus Safety Officer is required to successfully pass a physical agility test, and a bicycle-training course to be eligible for Bicycle patrol. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment.
