This role is responsible for performing routine tasks pertaining to the safety of individuals and the security of college property. As a Campus Safety Officer you would be responsible for inspecting college property to detect security hazards and for deterring maintenance problems and equipment failure. This position does not involve any responsibility for the performance of police or peace officer duties, such as the apprehension of violators. Rather, an incumbent would report any such situations to supervision or local police officials. The work is performed under the functional supervision of a Senior Campus Safety Officer and the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Auxiliary Services and/or the Assistant Director of Public Safety. As a Senior Campus Safety Officer the work involves responsibility for performing peace officer duties and security tasks pertaining to the safety and protection of individuals and the security of College property, including, but not limited to: property access control, fire and crime prevention and investigation, documentation and reporting of all incidents. Perform a variety of crime prevention, surveillance and law enforcement duties to protect the lives of students, staff and faculty, protect College property and maintain public order and safety on the Ithaca College campus. Reporting to the Director of Public Safety and the Public Safety Supervisor for assigned shifts, the Public Safety Officer (PSO) is responsible for the protection of University property and order on campus. Held accountable for the accuracy and thoroughness of departmental records and reports. Maintains a series of critical keys, accessing locked areas as necessary. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises the activities of all of the Security Associates on assigned shift. Reporting to the Director of Public Safety and the Public Safety Supervisor for assigned shifts, the Public Safety Officer (PSO) is responsible for the protection of University property and order on campus. The PSO responds to campus emergencies and provides services in the area of university safety, security, crime prevention, special events, campus information and assistance, parking and traffic control. The PSO also provides supervision of the Public Safety student staff on their assigned shift. The PSO must work well within the Student Experience Unit and have a positive interaction with students, faculty, and staff. The PSO conducts active and regular patrols of campus grounds and buildings in uniform on foot, car, and/or by bike to ensure the effective and efficient execution of the mission of the Department of Public Safety in providing a safe and secure environment for individuals and property at the University. Additionally, the PSO performs initial investigations of incidents and reported crime, makes accurate and timely written reports of all activity, responds to emergencies, problems, and complaints, and conducts special duties as assigned. Salary: $19.00-$20.00/hour, depending on experience, 40 hours per week. Essential Functions Patrol grounds and buildings in assigned area, occupied or vacant, to deter and detect criminal activity, security breaches, safety hazards, maintenance problems and enforce the rules of the University. Assist victims of crimes with making a police complaint, as desired or required. Lock and unlock buildings and rooms according to schedules, authorization lists and upon request. Write and submit complete, detailed, legible, and accurate reports in a timely manner, concerning incidents, accidents and calls for service. Enforce campus traffic and parking regulations. Direct vehicle and pedestrian traffic, provide information and directions, arrange assistance for motorists with mechanical problems, issue parking tickets and arrange towing of vehicles as necessary. Assist University officials, law enforcement agencies, fire, and other public safety officials in the performance of those duties in maintaining public safety on the campus. Function as the University's first responder to criminal incidents, fires, medical emergencies, chemical spills, natural disasters, and other emergencies on campus. Attend and participate in department meetings. Complete training programs when scheduled, including programs held during regularly scheduled hours and outside regularly scheduled hours. Some training programs may require travel. NYS Security, NIMS/ICS, CPR/AED certification required. Preferred qualifications include working knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
