Duties During the course of their careers, Uniformed Division Officers carry out assignments in protection. Duties include: Providing protection for The White House Complex, The Vice President's Residence, The Main Treasury Building and Annex, and foreign diplomatic missions and embassies in the Washington, D.C. area. Traveling in support of the Presidential, Vice Presidential, and foreign heads of state/government missions. Possess a current valid U.S. driver's license. Be at least age 20 and less than age 37 at the time you receive a conditional offer of employment, unless you have previous service in a Federal Civilian Law Enforcement position covered by special law enforcement or firefighter retirement provisions, including early or mandatory retirement. Applicants with veteran's preference must receive a conditional offer of employment prior to reaching age 40 to continue in the application process. Carry and use a firearm. Principal Accountabilities * Police officers for the Department of Public Safety operate on shifts twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year and are subject to be called back to duty at any time, regardless of their days off or other leave, including vacation. * During emergency circumstances, police officers are classified as "mission essential" personnel and must report for work. SALARY AND BENEFITS The successful applicant will receive salary and benefits that compare favorably with those offered in business or industry. The starting salary range based on experience, relative to the most current collective bargaining agreement, will be $35.30/hr. ($73,424). Salary progresses incrementally to $52/hr. ($108,160). Applicants that fail to achieve the 30th percentile of the Cooper Standards cannot re-apply or re-test for 6 months from the date of the test. 4. Structured Oral Interview The interview panel will interview all certified applicants with more than one year of service as a full-time law enforcement officer and non-certified applicants who pass the written and Physical Fitness tests. The interview will take place at the Beavercreek Police Department (Date and Time - To Be Determined). The interview will cover areas that include but are not limited to decision making, interpersonal skills, administrative skills, motivation and initiative. This interview has a maximum score of 100%. Applicants must obtain a minimum score of 70% to pass this interview. Applicants who get a 69% or below will not be eligible for reconsideration for one year. At the conclusion of the interviews, all applicants remaining that obtained a score of 70% or greater will be ranked based on the structured interview score only. After the ranking, and dependent on the number of vacancies, candidates will be moved on to the next phase of the hiring process. 5. Background Investigation / Pre-employment Polygraph Examination Those candidates who advance to this phase must submit three (3) letters of recommendation prior to advancing to the Chief Oral Interview. The Chief may also choose not to conduct interviews until a vacancy occurs. If an applicant is chosen, the Chief of Police will forward a recommendation to the City Manager for consideration. If a conditional offer of employment is extended to the applicant, they will participate in the remaining phases of the hiring process. Should the applicant fail to pass any remaining phases of the conditional offer of employment, they will be eliminated from the hiring process. This position requires a high degree of physical conditioning in order to make an arrest, apprehend suspects, and deal with the physical and mental stress associated with the duties of this position. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS A patrol officer is the community's first defense against crime and social disorder. He/she shall constantly be vigilant in the performance of his/her duties. Patrol officers have a responsibility to conduct themselves in a professional manner. Patrol officers are responsible for: Fair and impartial enforcement of the law; Apprehension of offenders; Preservation of social order; Protection of persons and property from the unlawful acts of others. A patrol officer shall be required to report for duty promptly at the time and place designated by lawful authority. He/she should not patrol his/her area in a fixed pattern, but should alternate his/her route. Whenever a door or window in his/her patrol area is found under unusual or suspicious circumstances, the patrol officer shall investigate thoroughly to determine if possible, whether a burglary or other crime has been committed. He/she shall, if necessary, request that the owner of the premises be notified in order that an inspection of the premises may be conducted. The dispatcher shall enter a record of all such incidents on the appropriate log. A single officer should not enter any building in which he/she reasonably believes a burglar to be hiding, but should wait for assistance before taking any further action. He/she should monitor the building until assistance arrives. He/she should also never enter any building alone without another officer, the owner or legal custodian of the building present. A patrol officer should observe all persons he/she encounters in his/her patrol area and shall investigate any persons whose appearance, conduct, or presence seems suspicious. A patrol officer should be on alert for wanted and missing persons and stolen vehicles, which may be in his/her patrol area. He/she should investigate the occupants and contents of vehicles, which cause suspicion, but only within the limits of proper legal procedure. When occasion demands it, a patrol officer shall courteously, but firmly, question persons on the public streets as to their names, address, cause of being on the street, and other matters relating to their circumstances. A patrol officer shall be friendly toward all children and be ever watchful of their physical and moral welfare, using every legal means to prevent the formation of gangs and the disbanding of any in existence. He/she shall warn children away from playing in dangerous areas. Patrol officers are charged with the enforcement of all provisions of local and state traffic codes. A patrol officer shall take notice of all nuisances, impediments, obstructions, defects, or other conditions, in or adjacent to the street, alleys, and public places, which tend to endanger the health, safety, or convenience of the public. Duties: Duty Personnel Control traffic flow and parking conditions Investigate traffic complaints and accidents Investigate criminal complaints Issue College ID cards and parking permits Maintain key inventory and appropriate records Assists with fire and other safety inspections Provide oversight for policies, procedures, and BMV checks related to use of College vehicles Maintain office procedures All Officers Perform responsibilities of Duty Personnel as appropriate and when assigned Patrols buildings and grounds on foot and in patrol vehicle Note and report all situations or conditions which are discovered to be a danger to campus and public safety; remedy or secure the area until a remedy is effected Note all suspicious persons or occurrences that come to their attention, and take appropriate action Prepare and maintain files of daily activity reports, incident reports and all required paperwork in a detailed, timely and accurate manner Responsible for opening and securing buildings on campus at prescribed times Escorts of persons, money, and/or receipts as needed by College departments Assist stranded motorists whenever possible Assist local law enforcement and other emergency services as needed, responding to life squad and other fire and emergency runs Administer emergency victim care as appropriate Perform police duties at special events Contributes to team effort by welcoming new and different work requirements; exploring new opportunities to enhance the services of the department; helping others accomplish related job results as and where needed. Qualifications Education: Minimum high school diploma; certified peace officer Experience: Peace Officers related experience required; experience with college campus safety and security issues preferred; knowledge and work experience in general office and emergency dispatch procedures Specialized Training: Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy, Patrol Certification or equivalent; OR any combination of education, experience, or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities; clean criminal background and traffic record with current valid drivers license required.
