As an Apprentice, you will learn to drive in a safe, efficient, and courteous manner while adhering to a pre-determined route and schedule. Apprentices will exhibit excellent customer services skills and allow passengers to board, travel and alight at scheduled stops. In addition to intensive training, Apprentices will also meet with a mentor who will provide additional guidance to ensure the success of the Apprentice. Upon successful completion of the program, Apprentices will receive a Coach/Bus Operator Journey worker's card issued by the State of Wisconsin. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Safely operate transit bus in strict compliance with Milwaukee County Transit System policies, guidelines, and procedures, as well as follow all Wisconsin and Federal traffic laws and regulations. Collect fares according to existing fare structure, inspect bus passes and issue valid transfers in a professional, courteous manner. Operate the radio, farebox and other systems within the bus in accordance with company policies and procedures. Provide public timetables and accurate information to customers. Call street locations, transfer points, major intersections, and other requested stops in compliance with ADA guidelines and Company policy. Provide accessibility for disabled passengers to board and alight by properly operating all ramps and lifts and safely securing passengers in compliance with ADA guidelines and Company policy. Demonstrate excellent customer service skills when interacting with all passengers. Perform vehicle inspections before, during and after scheduled work assignments. This includes internal and external areas of the bus, reporting all defects on proper forms. Monitor Special Bulletins and detours daily and make appropriate adjustments as needed. Public Transit Bus Drivers ensure the safe, courteous and reliable transport of customers through the professional and safe operation of transit buses. Public Transit Bus Drivers provide exceptional customer service and assistance and are an essential and critical part of the Shoreline Metro team. On-Demand (Paratransit) Bus Drivers serve as frontline employees of Metro Connection, the demand-response, accessible ADA public transit solution for the Sheboygan Urbanized Area and beyond. On-Demand Bus Drivers perform essential daily tasks including the professional, safe, dependable and courteous operation of transit buses and friendly customer service and support. Responsibilities • Safely and responsibly operate transit buses and vehicles in accordance with departmental policies and procedures according to daily manifests; • Safely and responsibly operate transit buses and vehicles in accordance with departmental policies and procedures on published fixed, shuttle or express routes; • Perform effective and proper Safety and Security Inspection Report on assigned buses; • Greet customers in a courteous and professional manner and provide customer support as needed with sensitivity, courtesy and tact; • Properly track fare media and ridership for each customer using the provided tablets each time a customer boards and exits the bus; • Ensure accuracy of all customer ridership data through careful and proper entering of data into tablets; • Enforce departmental policies and procedures and ensure customers follow all policies and procedures and maintain proper conduct on board all buses; • Assist all customers with safe and proper boarding and alighting of transit buses including safe and proper use of the vehicle's electric lift and ramp feature and securements; • Ensure safe and effective securement of customers and their mobility devices using departmental policies and procedures; • Perform audible announcements at major intersections, landmarks and popular destinations for all customers; • Properly collect and count fare media from customers and ensure proper fares are paid each time a customer boards a bus; • Track and record customer ridership using the provided tablets on each bus and ensure accuracy of ridership data through careful and proper entering of data into tablets; • Act as a professional representative of Shoreline Metro and the City of Sheboygan; • Work in a team environment and be able to work independently under supervision at all times; • On-time performance including timely operation of routes; • Performs other related duties as assigned. Education & Experience • Must have a safe driving record. • Should have 1-2 years minimum of verifiable driving experience of commercial vehicles (experience operating a bus is preferred but not required); • Must be able to properly and safely operate up to a 35-foot passenger buses and service vehicles; • Must be able to work nights, weekends, extra hours and/or overtime as required by department needs and must be available for “on-call” or emergency work; • High school diploma or equivalent; • Must successfully complete pre-employment drug test and physical exam, orientation training and 6month probationary period. • Must pass a physical examination for drivers and maintain those standards as a condition of employment. • Must submit to FTA required drug and alcohol testing requirements including but not limited to preemployment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspicion testing as a condition of employment. • Must possess and maintain a Class D license; may be required to possess or be able to obtain a valid WI Commercial Driver's License, Class B with passenger “P” endorsement and no air brake restrictions if operating a public transit bus. (Valid CDL must be obtained in a timely fashion during training if required.) Paratransit drivers do not require a CDL. Qualifications & Skills • Must possess good communication skills and be able to follow and communicate oral or written instructions and have the ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form. • Must be able to demonstrate an ability to read, understand, retain and recite information in training manuals, notices and standard operating procedures. • Possess the ability to sit for long periods of time, stand, and walk. Must be able to bend, kneel, twist, and reach for purposes of securing mobility devices. • Must be able to memorize, understand and drive assigned published bus routes. • Must possess ability to work in a fast-paced environment with times of high stress and anxiety. • Must have the ability to reasonably assist passengers on and off the bus with or without the assistance of a mobility aid. • Ability to work with elderly and disabled individuals.
