DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Incumbents are expected to follow well established rules and guidelines. Due to the nature of the work, employees in this class receive limited supervision. However, incumbents report to the Supervisor who is readily available via two-way radio and can provide direction on more serious situations which may arise such as traffic accidents/injuries. While the driving aspects are routine, situations arise regularly which require incumbents to exercise independent judgment such as in the disciplining of students and in evaluating traffic conditions. Success in this class is based on the incumbent's ability to: drive a large vehicle safely concentrating on road conditions while maintaining discipline of a large number of students on the bus; follow written and oral instructions; and perform required duties in accordance with strict time schedules.
The class of School Bus Driver is distinguished from the class of Bus Driver Instructor in that while the latter may perform some of the duties of a School Bus Driver, the latter's primary responsibility is to provide on-going training of the trainees and the School Bus Drivers in order to qualify and maintain their licenses and certificates.
