Senior Mechanical Engineer Job At Sargent & Lundy
Our electric power generation clients are seeking to increase the power output of their existing power plants to meet the electric demands. This is expanding work in the Mechanical Analysis Engineering group. You will work on major systems, equipment, and plant process in the following areas:
* Develop and lead licensing basis system and component evaluations for nuclear power uprate projects.
* This position will offer you the ability to directly apply your knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and experience in power plant engineering.
* Perform consulting level work for power uprates in the nuclear industry.
* Prepare and review calculations related to heat balances, power train pumps, heat exchangers, condenser/heat sink, and plant hazards to support client recommendations and reviews.
* Prepare task reports and equipment evaluations that present technical information in a clear and concise manner to meet client requirements.
* Perform equipment sizing, optimization evaluation, and selection in response to client needs to support the proposed power uprate.
* Interface with clients and project teams to present technical discussions and project status.
* Attend client meetings and site walkdowns to validate scope and ensure client satisfaction.
This role offers a hybrid work arrangement. You'll spend three days a week in the office, giving you the flexibility to work remotely for two days.

Essential skills and experience:
* This position requires a BSME from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background and interest in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
* 7+ years of experience in the nuclear power industry.
* Experience with nuclear power uprates and/or turbine retrofit projects.
* Experience and practical knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
* Balance of plant system and component evaluations
* Pinch point assessments and/or task reports
* Heat balance
* Power train pumps, heat exchangers, condenser/heat sink
* Circulating Water and Ultimate Heat Sinks
* All assignments require the preparation of calculations and/or reports, and excellent technical report writing skills are essential.
* Knowledge of the practical application of mechanical engineering and technology including applying systems, principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to a project design.
* Strong interest in numerical computations and problem solving.
* Working knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations that apply to mechanical engineering design of nuclear power plants.
* Proficiency with MS Office applications.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Valued but not required skills and experience:
* MSME from an ABET accredited program with a strong academic background
* PE License

This position allows for a hybrid work schedule with a mix of work spent in office and working remote from home.
Under the direction of the Mechanical Project Lead, this position will offer you the opportunity to work with multi-disciplined engineering and design project teams in developing mechanical physical layout drawings in a 3-D model
Challenging assignments that include the design of mechanical systems, and investigating, trouble-shooting, and solving a wide variety of mechanical design issues
Utilize 3D modeling software tools to generate mechanical design schematics
Act as the Mechanical design team lead in the coordination of detailed design phases for all aspects of an integrated mechanical design model
Coordinate and provide guidance to other designers and project team members to ensure a complete and timely design
Independently plan and execute design deliverables, such as general arrangements, piping isometrics, piping composites, pipe support drawings, and equipment location drawings
There may be the opportunity to conduct field walkdowns and data gathering at client facilities
Provide guidance as a mentor in the development of less experienced drafters and designers
Qualifications

Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities
Provide engineering and 3D Revit support for multiple projects that include HVAC, piping, plumbing and fire protection.
Perform HVAC load calculations, ductwork static pressure calculations, and pump head calculations.
Performs detailed phases of engineering work on major projects or total engineering work on projects of smaller or moderate scope.
Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard accepted methods.
May devise new approaches and solutions to problems encountered and communicates changes to the team.
May supervise and coordinate the work of less experienced engineers and designers and be responsible for checking a portion or all of the drawings completed on the project within the discipline.
May take part in client contact and business development activities.
Meets with client to define project scope, present project progress, and assure client satisfaction.
May write portions or all of the specifications and assist in or prepare total cost estimates.
Performs design work with REVIT.
Develops engineering concepts and presentations.
Coordinates work with other disciplines.
Keeps current on new design methods and ideas.
Travel required.

Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited college program, which qualifies for licensure in the state of practice, is required.

Qualifications
What You'll Need on Day One:
