To prevent drowning, injuries or accidents. Rescues and assists swimmers when necessary and administers emergency services, assistance to the side, backboarding, CPR, and first aid when applicable. Monitors all areas of pool areas and reacts proactively to prevent accidents and incidents.
Inspects facilities for cleanliness; assists in daily maintenance of the swimming pool, locker room, and deck cleaning. Monitors pool water chemistry through testing of water samples. Fills out all necessary paperwork including attendance and chemical logs, incident reports, participant certificates, and other paperwork as necessary.
Assists with opening and closing procedures. Takes care of equipment and stores equipment properly. Attends and contributes at in-service training, skills practice sessions and meetings. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Uses all required safety equipment.
Teaches swimming lessons according to a prescribed routine and curriculum. Tests program participants for swimming level skills; passes participants for participation in more advanced classes.
Supervisory Responsibility:
The incumbent is responsible for effectively managing his or her workload to achieve departmental goals. Assures that responsibilities are performed in compliance with federal and state regulations, Pueblo West Metropolitan District policies and procedures. Maintains confidentiality of information consistent with applicable federal, state and county rules and regulations. The incumbent may confer with employees, supervisory, and administrative personnel regarding departmental policies and procedures. Advises applicable administrators or departments of potential problems or concerns. The incumbent assists in recommending and implementing modifications to systems, policies and procedures.
Knowledge
Knowledge about water conditions at aquatic facilities or other equivalent places.
Familiarity with protocols, operating procedures, and safety policies.
Familiar with methods and techniques of providing on-site emergency medical services.
Skills
Can clearly communicate information to a variety of people and age groups.
Swimming proficiency and comfort in all water conditions.
Abilities
The ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of visitors and other staff members.
Good judgement and evaluation on evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities and assessing what threats can present to their safety.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications (Note: Any acceptable combination of education, training and experience that provides the above knowledge, abilities and skills may be substituted.)
Required Education/Certifications Required
Must have a current and valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Training.
CPR/AED as a Professional Rescuer.
First Aid or equivalent training.
All certifications must be maintained the term of employment.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
The employee will work a variety of hours including days, evenings, weekends and holidays. Employees exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
Special Requirements
Must provide hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and any other outdoor safety gear not supplied by the district.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, swim, walk, and talk or hear.
The noise level in the environment is moderate to loud.
