Rhode Island Country Club history

By the early 1920's the Club had advanced to the point where it could expand to 18 holes with the purchase of an additional 55 acres adjoining the orignal 50 acres.

On December 15, 1924, a group of 50 prominent Rhode Islanders purchased the estate and mansion of Colonel George L. Shepley, believing Warwick Neck to be the ideal location for a yacht club.

In June of 1925 the property was once again sold, this time to C. Preston Knight.

Warwick Country Club has been a landmark in the Warwick Neck area with a history dating back into the early 1930’s.

In 1938, when the club was showing gradual recovery from the difficult time caused by the Great Depression, disaster struck in the form of a hurricane that destroyed the yacht area.

In 1949, Valley Ledgemont Country Club was sold to local business 60 Inc. and renamed Valley Country Club.

In 1954, the day after the dedication of the new nine holes, Hurricane Carol struck with all its fury, but, once again, the members of Warwick Country Club cleaned up and rebuilt.

At the first meeting of the Pawtucket Country Club held on March 9, 1955 the following officers were elected:

On June 2, 1959, Knights farm became the King Phillip Country Club, but on December 31st of the same year, the name was changed to Quidnessett Country Club.

By 1982, three groups had developed among those involved with Quidnessett: – shareholders who were not members, members who were not shareholders and members who were.

After the G.O.P. fundraiser with President Bush, the 1990’s returned Quidnessett Country Club to its business of quiet growth.

It took five years to raise the million dollars, but in 1995 Valley bought the club for $3,000,000.

In 1997, under the direction of golf course architect Ron Prichard, the Club undertook a project to restore its golf course to its original Donald Ross design.

In 2002, Ian Scott-Taylor, a golf course architect from Wales, was brought in to blend Follett’s and Cornish’s original nine holes to visually look like one design.

In April of 2011, Valley Country Club embarked on an exciting new future under new ownership, Valley CC Investors, LLC. The group, comprised of more than sixty member investors, purchased Valley Country Club to ensure its financial stability and to maintain the over 60 years of tradition at Valley.
