ABOUT THE JOB:

The Director of Respiratory Care provides clinical leadership and program direction to respiratory care practitioners (RCP's), students and support staff. This includes close collaboration with the department's medical director in understanding and planning for future clinical operations while assuring daily operations are safe, high quality and efficient. This role is responsible for leading and managing clinical educator(s); managers; team leaders, RCP's and students whose duties and conduct in completing them impacts outcomes in several major domains: the practice and outcome of clinical respiratory care across Children's Health System of Texas (CHST), trust and confidence among patient family members, providers and the community at large; coordination and collaboration within CHST; networking with others engaged in pediatric and neonatal respiratory care at the local, regional, state and national level.

Responsibilities:

* Has a global awareness of organization's current and immediate future clinical requirements and how respiratory therapists must change current processes and practices to meet those requirements.
* Directly accountable for the ongoing quality and safety of respiratory care practices.
* With the managers and team leaders, monitors daily operations for safe practices, analyzes data and qualitative information and addresses issues as close to the occurrence as possible while formulating long term strategies to prevent recurrences.
* Establishes, maintains and monitors team compositions and staffing schedules to meet demands for service with appropriate, safe, cost-effective resources. This includes during unexpected patient surges, internal and external disaster events.
* With the managers and team leaders, monitors daily operations for safe practices, analyzes data and qualitative information and addresses issues as close to the occurrence as possible while formulating long term strategies to prevent recurrences.
* Works closely with department's medical director and internal stake holders to identify and resolve clinical care issues, operational issues and to improve service excellence.

WORK EXPERIENCE

* At least 3 years experience in a critical care pediatric clinical role is required
* At least 2 years experience in a clinical leadership role is required

EDUCATION

* A graduate, professional work or advanced degree; or equivalent experience is required.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

* Registered Respiratory Therapist Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care is required upon hire
* Neonatal Pediatric Specialist Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care is required within 18 months of hire
* Texas State RCP license is required upon hire
* Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire

Under general supervision and medical direction, provides any or all of the designated respiratory care therapies designed to care for patients with deficiencies and abnormalities, which affect the pulmonary system and associates aspects of cardiopulmonary function.

This position requires providing care and/or service to a critically ill through sub-acutely ill newborn patient population in a manner that demonstrates an understanding of the functional and/or developmental age of the individual served.

This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of San Gabriel Valley Medical Center. It is expected that the employee will demonstrate behavior consistent with the Core Values. The employee shall support San Gabriel Valley Medical Center's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).
- Follows appropriate Code Blue / White notification procedures

- Functions in a Code Blue quickly and calmly providing CPR

- Communicates significant changes in patient's condition/status in a timely manner

- Effectively prioritizes clinical Interventions and care

- Maintains PALS, NRP and NPS as per advanced Neonatal RCP community standards

- Humidification Therapy

- Oxygen set-up/administration

- Pulse Oximetry set-up/monitoring

- Arterial blood gas sampling and analysis

- Pediatric heel sticks/capillary blood draws

- Aerosol Medications (Nebulizer Treatments)

- Non-invasive ventilation: high flow nasal cannula and nasal CPAP

- Postural Drainage and Percussion

- Suctioning (nasotracheal, oral and ETT)

- Oral Airway Management

- Trach Management (Monthly change and Daily maintenance)

- ETT care

- Intubation and airway management

- Ventilator set-up and operation

- Ventilator troubleshooting

- Weaning and Extubating

- High Frequency Oscillatory Ventilator: set up, operation and troubleshooting

- High risk delivery attendance: infant resuscitation and stabilization

- Exogeneous sufactant administration

· Obtains necessary training prior to initial equipment use

· Assures equipment is in operating order prior to use

· Uses the following equipment in accordance with manufacturer's operating instructions, including but not limited to:

- Draeger Baby Log Infant Ventilator

- Compressed air/gas tanks

Graduate of an accredited School of Respiratory Therapy with an Associate Degree in Respiratory Therapy or Registered Respiratory Therapist

Minimum one year Level II or Level III NICU experience required

Current CA License as a Respiratory Care Practitioner

Current BLS and NRP Cards, NRP instructor preferred, PALS preferred

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) preferred

Perinatal/Pediatric Specialist certification by the NBRC preferred
