Provides information, counseling and support to WIC prenatal and postpartum participants to assist them in breastfeeding. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Has breastfed at least one baby (does not have to be currently breastfeeding). Is enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help other mothers enjoy a positive experience. Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Receives a caseload of WIC clients and makes routine periodic contacts with all assigned clients. Provides information, breastfeeding education and support for women in managing common maternal and infant breastfeeding concerns. Provides in-clinic evaluation as needed. Refers mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to the WIC Designated Breastfeeding Expert or Nutritionist, the mother's health care provider, and other community resources as needed. Teaches and facilitates breastfeeding support groups and/or classes. Issues hand and electric breast pumps to qualified mothers and documents issuance. Assists in establishing a breastfeeding friendly clinic and helps with special projects, such as breastfeeding promotion month and bulletin boards. Attends required trainings and/or meetings to increase knowledge and skills of breastfeeding, and the WIC program. Mentors new Breastfeeding Peer Counselors.
