The laboratory of Dr. Michael Shadlen in the Department of Neuroscience at Columbia University has an open position for a highly motivated Research Technician II or III to gain proficiency in a dynamic, collaborative research environment, assisting in investigating the neural mechanisms underlying decision-making in mouse models. More information about the Shadlen lab can be found by visiting *********************************** About the Research Technician role: You will hold an integral role within the lab and be deeply involved in research work with the Shadlen lab's mouse group. The ideal candidate is someone who works well in a constantly evolving environment, exhibits strong communication skills, can multitask, and has a desire to be a part of a robust scientific community. This role is best fit for someone who is proactive in their work style, passionate about the research that the lab is conducting, and willing to commit to stay with the lab team for 2 years or more. What you'll do: Under the direction of the PI and the Postdoctoral Research Scientist, perform tasks that utilize mouse model systems. Performs behavioral training of mice. Manage mouse colony room: setup breeding cages, weaning pups, and toe cut for genotyping. Assist in conducting daily lab routines such as IACUC protocol maintenance, lab supplies, and safety compliance. Perform experiments that can involve anatomical viral tracing and brain histology. Under the direction of the PI and the Postdoctoral Research Scientist, assist in performing survival and non-survival surgeries, including surgical preparation. Performs other laboratory setup duties as assigned by the PI. The Research Technician will have the opportunity to learn the measurement of neural activity using 2-photon calcium imaging and/or electrophysiology, and the perturbation of activity in targeted neural circuit elements during task performance. What you bring: A bachelor's degree in neuroscience, biology, or other related area of science or engineering is required. Willingness and ability to work with rodents on a daily basis is required. Willingness and ability to learn specific techniques for performing tasks is required. Strong organizational and communication skills, a strong sense of responsibility, and a collaborative style that fosters teamwork and cooperation as well as the ability to work independently within a dynamic team environment is required. Prior experience in rodent wet labs, rodent handling, and rodent surgery is strongly preferred. Prior experience performing tissue histology and antibody staining would be a plus. Compensation Range: Research Technician II - $47,840 (minimum) - $59.800 (midpoint) - $77,740 (maximum) Research Technician III - $56,695 (minimum) - $70,900 (midpoint) - $92,115 (maximum) A candidate at the level of Research Technician II will have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of relevant research experience in a laboratory environment. A candidate at the level of Research Technician III will have a minimum of a bachelor's degree and a minimum of 4 years of relevant research experience in a laboratory environment. Pay Type: Annual HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
