We will use FISH to assess the localization of stable and viable commensal bacteria in live and wild-collected hookworms from Ghana. Potential applicants will also be expected to develop lab culturing protocols for rearing hookworms (from eggs to adults on nematode growth media). They must also be willing to learn and perform bioinformatic analyses of associated gut microbiomes of hookworms, as we will first perform 16S sequencing on a subset of these specimens to assess the microbial community of cultured nematodes

The lab of Sabrina Russo at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln (************************** seeks a summer field technician to aid in a project quantifying the effects of smooth sumac, a woody encroaching plant species, on rangeland plant communities in the Nebraska sandhills. This project will inform large-scale assessments of sumac's impact on grasslands, sumac encroachment rates, and point the way to better rangeland management.
The technician will gain experience (1) conducting plant identification and other field methods for assessing grassland vegetation and microclimate, (2) learning remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) techniques, (3) completing data management and analysis, and (4) working with others in team-based ecological research. They will accompany a graduate student, Lillie Hoffart, and a small field team. Some travel from the field station to other sites in the sandhills may be required. The assistant will also assist with research projects in the forest plot located at the same study site. The study site is the Niobrara River Preserve, which is located along the Niobrara River, an ecologically important area with opportunities for hiking, fishing, tubing, or other recreational activities.
The position is full-time (40 hours/week), hourly ($15/hour) temporary (3 months) with no benefits. The position is available starting around May 20th through the second week of August. There can be some flexibility with start and end dates. Housing (in a dorm-style setting) will be provided.

Perform a variety of bacterial based assays including inactivation, absence of mycoplasma, bioburden, M bovis potency, sterility moisture analysis, microbial limits and other various biological tests as needed.
Maintain critical reagent inventory including preparation and inventory management.
Conduct laboratory investigation and determine appropriate CAPA.
Monitor processes and alert supervisory personnel of known or suspected quality problems.
Practice basic aseptic laboratory procedures as per training and SOPs.
Apply Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) to assigned work.
Learn and demonstrate understanding of basic sterilization principles.
Learn and comply with regulatory requirements such as USDA, FDA, EU
Assist in inventory management of laboratory supplies.
Education and Experience
Required:
Two years associate degree in science or
One to two years relevant experience with relevant science-based college courses.
Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in biological sciences
Experience with aseptic manufacturing environments.
Competent using Window-based applications, specifically MODA, SAP, LIMS, Process Runner, and Excel
Technical Skills and Competencies Required
Required:
Basic Aseptic technique, Excellent Organization, Verbal, and Written Communication skills, understanding of aseptic operation and microbiology.

Potential applicants should be versed in molecular techniques, be able to demonstrate initiative, and can take the lead on the project (by doing extensive background readings, protocol development, and validation of techniques) related to the utilization of Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) techniques. We will use FISH to assess the localization of stable and viable commensal bacteria in live and wild-collected hookworms from Ghana. Potential applicants will also be expected to develop lab culturing protocols for rearing hookworms (from eggs to adults on nematode growth media). They must also be willing to learn and perform bioinformatic analyses of associated gut microbiomes of hookworms, as we will first perform 16S sequencing on a subset of these specimens to assess the microbial community of cultured nematodes
