Scheduled Hours 40 The Dai Lab is focused on understand the homeostasis of lung vascular biology and pathogenesis of cardiopulmonary diseases with the goals of 1) understanding underlying mechanisms of pulmonary vascular diseases including pulmonary hypertension, and 2) identifying novel precision therapeutic approaches and targets for lung diseases and right heart failure due to pulmonary hypertension. Current research projects include 1) defining the mechanism of genetic factors influencing pulmonary arterial hypertension, 2) evaluating how endothelial cells crosstalk with other lung cell populations in the disease lungs including COPD and lung fibrosis, and 3) developing novel approaches for lung specific targeting on lung diseases. Our recent publications include influential articles in Circulation (2016), AJRCCM (2018;2018), ERJ (2022), ATVB (2022), and Hypertension (2023), Circulation (2024). We leverage cutting-edge technologies like genetic lineage tracing, CRISPR genomic editing, single-cell omics, and spatial transcriptomics to unravel complex cardiopulmonary vascular diseases. The Division of Neonatology, the Neonatal Diseases Research Program, the Department of Pediatrics, and the CMRI are in an exciting period of growth and expansion. The Neonatal Diseases Research Program (NDRP) is located in the seventh floor of Children's Mercy Research Institute research tower attached to Children's Mercy Kansas City. This is a a new state-of-the-art, nine floor, research building with greater than 375,000 total sq. feet of wet lab space. The new CMRI building houses the majority of CM investigators pursuing translational research, and is equipped several research cores including genomics, flow cytometry, imaging, GMP biologics, and a rodent vivarium. The NDRP has >1000 sq.feet of assigned extensive wet lab space on the 7 th floor for current personnel and to facilitate future expansion. The NDRP, which focuses broadly on the molecular mechanisms regulating endothelial and epithelial injury in the context of the developing lung and intestine, is funded by the NHLBI, NICHD, NIDDK, the March of Dimes, and local foundations. The laboratory combines human genetic studies, cell-culture models, microbiome analyses, transgenic mouse models, novel therapeutics, and translational studies to investigate the inflammatory/developmental basis of neonatal diseases such as bronchopulmonary dysplasia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and rare infectious diseases. The laboratory currently employs 6 full time PhD and masters level scientists. Junior faculty and clinical fellows from Neonatology and infectious disease participate in the NDRP. We advocate a culture of discovery, innovation, team science and excellence. Access to an active neonatal genomic biorepository established by Dr. Sampath, that houses de-identified DNA samples from phenotypically well-characterized preterm cohorts, is available. Active collaborations with the Children's Mercy Center for Pediatric Genomic Medicine (Director: Dr. Tomi Pastinen) are underway for advanced sequencing-based discovery of human genetic loci affecting several neonatal diseases, and include the use of single-cell sequencing to characterize cellular phenotypic alterations in pre-clinical models. The Genomic Answers for Kids Study (GAKS), pioneered by the Genome Center, is a one of a kind study characterizing the genetic basis of rare/undiagnosed diseases using advanced sequencing/epigenetic profiling. Several opportunities exist for collaborations with research faculty in the CMRI who study mechanisms of neonatal-perinatal disease including Dr. Robert Lane (Physician in chief), Dr. Todd Bradley (CPGM immunogenetic director), and Dr. Susana Chavez Bueno (Infectious disease) and Dr. Michael Soares (Center for Perinatal research). The Fetal Health Center (Medical Director: Dr. Timothy Bennett), which is dedicated to management to babies diagnosed with complex pathology/diseases, and includes a tissue biorepository, offers opportunities for research and collaboration. We are seeking a Research Assistant to help develop new, sustainable biosolutions based on RNAi technology that are environmentally friendly and safe for animal and human health. This position involves basic molecular biology work and insect bioassays. We are seeking a highly motivated undergraduate student to join our research team for a part-time, temporary position in computational analysis related to our NSF EAGER grant, "Solving Representation Learning and Catastrophic Forgetting with Adaptive Resonance Theory" (NSF Grant #2420248). The successful candidate will work closely with a team of researchers focused on advancing the understanding and application of Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural networks. The primary responsibility of the role is to contribute to the performance analysis of ART neural network models, with an emphasis on assessing and optimizing computational complexity. The candidate will evaluate and implement innovative methods to reduce algorithmic computational complexity while preserving model performance and quantify the tradeoffs between speed and performance. Key Responsibilities: * Performance Analysis: Conduct performance analyses on Adaptive Resonance Theory (ART) neural network models, focusing on assessing computational complexity and performance metrics * Collaborative Research: Contribute to research discussions and project updates, assisting with integrating experimental findings into broader project goals and publications * Report Generation: Prepare reports and presentations summarizing research findings and contributing to the drafting of research papers related to the project Minimum Qualifications A high school diploma or an equivalent combination of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary Preferred Qualifications * Education: Currently enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student pursuing a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Computer Science or a closely related field * Technical Skills: * College-level Python coursework * Exposure to Java, Javascript, C++, and C# * Communication Skills: Ability to present technical information clearly, both in written and verbal formats * Teamwork: Ability to collaborate effectively in a research environment, contributing both independently and as part of a team Anticipated Hiring Range The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $15.00/hourly.
