The Chemist II performs each essential duty safely, satisfactorily, and in a timely manner. • Understand the purpose of formulation components and reformulate to solve straightforward customer (internal/external) problems with minimal supervision • Manage the assigned LWR /projects, including timeline and planning, on a weekly timescale • Provides data-driven insights to support diagnostics and resolution of issues in manufacturing, application, and formulation • Summarize test data in the form of spreadsheets, reports, and presentation; draws conclusions • Infer next course of experimental actions from completed testing and results • Update and raise flags on projects; anticipate and mitigate delays • Represent R&D and work effectively with cross-functional groups including but not limited to quality control and pilot plants • Follows safe work practices for personal and equipment safety, in both the laboratory and in the field. End results are zero or minimum safety incidents and a clean, orderly working environment • Works according to quality standards as set by Lab management (for example ISO 9001) • Maintains detailed technical records in the form of electronic Notebooks and/or Computer Databases Job Requirements Academic education level (BS, MS or higher) in Chemistry, Material Science, Chemical Engineering - or comparable experience/working level. In good faith, we anticipate relying on this range when setting wages for this position. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range. This position requires a self-driven, well organized, experienced Food Scientist who can exercise decision making skills and time management. This position supports the company's production facility with the responsibilities that are included below. Primary Responsibilities: Work with cross functional teams in the development of new high complexity product formulations and/or reformulations of existing products, including commercialization. Manage a portfolio of assigned high-level product development projects through the various stages of the product development life cycle. Duplicate competitive seasonings for flavor, texture, color, nutritional content, and adherence to FDA and USDA standards and regulations. Facilitate product development by working with suppliers as well as marketing, quality and production. Utilizes knowledge of current regulations, product formulation, supplier specifications, customer requirements and Company standards to develop and update finished product ingredient statements and nutritional documents as defined by FDA and USDA, in addition to product specifications and processing procedures. Independently initiates, investigates, and implements significant new process improvements, and cost savings projects. Working with sourcing, assess raw material substitutions for usage and formulation consistency Coordinate with the Quality Department to comply with HACCP and all Food Safety Programs Support operations through project handoff and during production with formulation issues Stay up-to-date on new regulations and current events regarding food science by reviewing FDA and USDA regulations. Provide guidance to other Food Scientist(s) Comply with GMP, personal hygiene, HACCP and other quality and employee safety programs Other duties as assigned Skills & Qualifications: Bachelor's in Food Science/ Biology/ Chemistry or related field with relevant 5+ years' work experience in seasonings, spices, sauces, processed foods, sausage or meat snacks industry preferred Knowledge of product specifications, nutrition and labeling for finished products and ingredients Demonstrated experience in high-level product development and formulation from concept to completion Proven ability to apply food science and food engineering principles to solve problems Strong computer skills, especially Excel Ability to effectively communicate and interact when working with cross-functional teams Well organized with the ability to prioritize projects and adapt to changing deadlines Ability to take initiative and work independently Willingness to cultivate career-growth opportunities and advancement within a progressive, forward-thinking firm with a proven record of steady growth
