Kind of Work Upon successful completion of all phases of training, a Fire Recruit will be promoted to a Firefighter I classification with an annual entrance salary of $43,517 plus millage pay (approximately $5,000). State statute provides an additional $6,000.00 in annual supplemental pay after one (1) year of service and certification as a Firefighter I. Uniform fire suppression personnel who have had three (3) years of continuous service with the Fire Department shall receive an increase in salary of 2% and shall thereafter receive an increase in salary of 2% for each year of additional service up to and including 20 years. Employees in the classification of Firefighter I and above are eligible to receive incentive pay of five (5) percent over their normal rate of pay for achieving an Emergency Medical Technician Certification.
Trainee-level work under close supervision, involving training in the response to Fire Department emergency situations in the City of New Orleans for the protection of life and property, and reducing the incidence of fire and the loss of life to civilians and fire personnel. Work involves training in emergency medical response, extinguishment and prevention of fires, Fire Department related public safety and emergency management related work as required; semi-skilled work in maintaining equipment, apparatus, and quarters in good condition; and related duties as required.
This class represents the training level for a career firefighter in which the employee receives initial assignment to the fire academy for intensive and specialized training in all phases of fire related work. The essential functions of the Fire Recruit position include: attending training classes, lectures and seminars on the subject matter being taught; reading and studying textbooks, manuals, journals, and other training materials; and receiving training in the physical aspects of fire related work including: physical conditioning (e.g. running; calisthenics; etc.), climbing ladders, and handling fire hoses. The employee must obtain a certification as a Firefighter I and Firefighter II before graduating from the Fire Academy.
Upon completion of all phases of Fire Recruit training, candidates will be promoted to the classification of Firefighter I and will serve a one (1) year probationary period in that classification. An Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification must be obtained during the Firefighter I probationary period to ensure continued employment; failure to become certified during the probationary period may result in termination, once a sufficient number of Firefighter I and EMT is reached. The essential functions of the Firefighter I position are: preventing, responding to and mitigating fire related and medical emergencies, extinguishing fires, rendering medical care, conducting inspections for fire safety violations, presenting fire safety and public education programs, maintaining equipment, apparatus and quarters in good condition, receiving and following orders or instructions from members of a higher rank; and related duties as required.
Work involves an element of personal danger.
This is a training classification in which an employee does not achieve permanent status.

Deputy (Recruit)) works in (Direct Supervision) of the Orleans Justice Center housing unit as an officer who is responsible for supervising inmates, making decisions, solving problems, and managing behavior in the unit within the parameters of OPSO policies and procedures. Deputies are expected to set clear expectations with inmates, use positive reinforcement techniques, hold inmates accountable for their behavior, treat inmates with respect and consideration, be just and fair, manage housing units by walking and talking, identify and address inmate concerns, be a source of information, encourage inmates to take responsibility for themselves, plan and supervise unit activities, develop and measure personal goals for the unit, apply policies and procedures appropriately to achieve unit objectives and effectively communicate among officers on shift, during shift change, with ranking supervisors and other jail staff.
SALARY
The salary compensation for the Deputy (Recruit) is $18.45 per hour, including bi- weekly payroll disbursements. The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, vision, and life insurance as well as dental coverage and participation in the Louisiana Sheriff's Pension Fund. • Managing the housing unit to ensure a safe and humane environment: Recruiters use observation and communication to maximize compliant inmate behavior and minimize the occurrence of disruptive inmate behavior in the housing unit.
