Dr. Mark Huggins: Do your research. Whether you are getting started as a musician/entrepreneur or trying to land a job in the music industry at large, spend some time researching how much people are currently earning, and then don't settle for less. Often, simply knowing what to expect when negotiating will make all the difference!
Dr. Mark Huggins: Understanding how to utilize technology, Digital Audio Workstations in specific, and leveraging social media are two things that come to mind first. As an example, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas won five Grammys in 2020 for an album they produced in a bedroom! While that type of success is uncommon, more and more artists are finding success in seemingly unconventional ways.
Dr. Mark Huggins: The current music industry is ripe with potential for artists who enjoy connecting with others and do not mind putting in some work behind the scenes building their artist profile. Creating a digital portfolio is a great start because it can be shared easily (and often). Likewise, building an artist website and establishing a presence on social media are great ways for artists to be seen.
Networking is also vital to artists, and websites such as indieonthemove.com can be used to form new connections with venues and artists, or help book tours, for artists who desire performing live.
Lastly, I would encourage artists to consider themselves as entrepreneurs, and embrace the duality of creating their art while embracing the business side of music. Meaning, that for every hour spent practicing and performing, at least one hour should be dedicated to self-promotion, developing online content, making connections, balancing the books, researching venues, planning tours, and a host of other things to promote and maintain the business side of being an artist.
