The Outside Plant (OSP) Fiber Design Engineer is responsible for the detailed network design of fiber-based networks. This role requires an in-depth understanding of current fiber optic design standards and industry processes. The engineer will closely coordinate with site fielding staff and drafting personnel to support final product delivery.
Typical responsibilities range from determining pathway routing and construction alternatives based on site walkouts to generating final detailed designs. The OSP Fiber Design Engineer is fully responsible for the final design content, budgets, splicing schematics, and document generation to support the placement of physical fiber infrastructure for both Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) communication facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Preliminary & High-Level Design:
Develop high-level route designs and facility specifics to manage fielding request instructions.
Support the team and operations with new designs for small cells, macros, third parties, and ODN.
Detailed Design & Execution:
Perform design within allocated budgets and timeframes.
Provide design lead and project managers with updates on progress and potential roadblocks.
Advise the Engineering Lead regarding design progress and challenges encountered.
Participate in process improvement initiatives.
Project Execution Responsibilities:
Produce KMZ files for High-Level Designs (HLD), Notices to Proceed (NTP), cost estimates, material orders, and Bill of Materials (BOMs) for build partners.
Perform detailed design in GIS-based systems.
Support design-related jurisdictional permits and drawings.
Monitor and track project milestones, providing regular updates to the Project Manager.
Assist with Quality Control (QC) and as-built efforts by incorporating necessary design changes and updates.
