Patrol HCMA property while operating a patrol car, golf cart, motorcycle, motor scooter, bicycle, pick-up truck, fire truck, horse, watercraft and/or snowmobile, or on foot in a variety of environmental conditions and over variable terrain.
Investigate complaints regarding suspicion of criminal activity gathering information by interviewing and obtaining statements of victims, witnesses, and suspects and confidential informants.
Conduct searches during daylight or darkness of buildings, open or heavily wooded outdoor areas with even or uneven terrain, beaches, marshes, marinas, and golf courses.
Apprehend persons suspected of violating laws and ordinances, affecting arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints. May involve climbing over obstacles, jumping down from elevated surfaces, jumping over obstacles, ditches and streams or crawling in confined areas.
Render assistance at fire or accident scenes such as lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects for distances of up to 150 yards.
Prepare investigative and other reports including sketches using appropriate grammar, symbols, and mathematical computations.
Advise the public on laws, ordinances, rules and regulations, about use of park facilities and provide park visitors with information pertaining to park use and points of interest maintaining a positive public relations atmosphere.
Controls animal population to obtain balance of wildlife and habitat using control measures in accordance with the HCMA wildlife management plan.
PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
Perform maintenance duties including but not limited to routine patrol vehicle maintenance; snow removal; the grooming of bike, ski or nature trails; and other grounds or maintenance duties as skills allow.
Perform operational duties including but not limited to mail deliveries; motor vehicle permit sales; bank transports or escorts; toll gate relief; radio inventory; fire extinguisher inventory; first aid supply inventory; and safety inspections of playground equipment, hike/bike trails, picnic areas.
Perform public relations, photography or naturalist functions including but not limited to school presentations and nature center programs.
Perform administrative assignments including but not limited to pre-employment background investigations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
MCOLES Certified Officer or certifiable Police Academy graduate in the State of Michigan.
Associate's Degree or minimum 60 credit hours earned at an accredited school preferably in law enforcement, criminal justice or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possess a valid State of Michigan motor vehicle license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Unsullied personal life free from crimes of moral turpitude as determined by a criminal history and background investigation.

Background Investigation

A comprehensive investigation of each applicant's background will be conducted. Applicants will be fingerprinted. A check will be made of the applicant's present and past employment, financial responsibilities, traffic violation record, conservation law conviction record and criminal conviction record. An unacceptable report of any of these records will be cause for rejection of the applicant or disqualification of the applicant's examination. A felony conviction will automatically disqualify the applicant. Reports on these and other related matters will be made a part of the investigation report. This report may be used as a partial basis for the personal qualification rating at the interview.
Applicants that are disqualified for any reason may not re-apply for a police officer examination for six (6) months from the date of disqualification.
CANDIDATES MUST PASS ALL TESTS IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBILITY LIST.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this examination is to establish an eligibility list from which to fill present and future vacancies including temporary positions. The list will remain in effect for six (6) months but may be extended. GENERAL INFORMATION
Pay Rate and Fringe Benefits:
Full-time positions will be paid at the minimum pay rate with annual increases where applicable. Payment is on a bi-weekly basis. Full-time, permanent employees receive fringe benefits, which include vacation pay, sick leave pay, health care insurance, optical, dental, long-term disability, life insurance and a retirement plan. Full-time positions are subject to mandatory and voluntary overtime assignments.
Medical Examination:
A pre-employment medical examination, including a drug screen, is given to persons to be hired by the County to evaluate their required physical and mental health. Candidates who do not pass the medical examination and drug screen will be disqualified. APPLICANTS MUST MEET MSCTC STANDARDS.
Civil Service Appeal Rights:
Persons denied permission to compete in an examination may make a written appeal to the Wayne County Civil Service Commission for a final decision within twenty (20) days after the mailing of such notification, stating the basis for their complaint.
Under the Rules of the Department of Personnel/Human Resources (Rule 6, Section 12 and 13), requests to review the personal qualifications interviews must be made in writing within twenty (20) days after the mailing of the notice of results and any appeal concerning the ratings received must be made in writing within twenty (20) days after the review. Probationary Period:
Appointees must successfully complete jailer's training and a probationary period as provided in the collective bargaining agreement before the candidate achieves regular status.

Pay Rate and Fringe Benefits:
Full-time positions will be paid at the minimum pay rate with annual increases where applicable. Payment is on a bi-weekly basis. Medical Examination:

At the time of application, applicants must be currently accepted to or attending a MCOLES approved police academy or must be State of Michigan pre-service certifiable as a law enforcement officer.
* Must be State of Michigan pre-service certifiable as a law enforcement officer under Act 203, Public Acts of 1965 as amended or currently attending a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) approved Basic Training School (Police Academy) at the time of application.
* Must be a U.S. citizen and a high school graduate or equivalent.
* Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position as required by the Southfield Police Department, including operation of motor vehicles and other equipment.
* Must have no felony convictions and no record of serious misdemeanor convictions and be of a good moral character.
* Must have a valid Michigan driver's license. Out-of-state licenses are accepted provided the applicant can obtain a Michigan license.
* Good driving record as determined by the City of Southfield's standards.
* Must be able to meet the MCOLES Employment Standards.
The selection process will include the completion of a City of Southfield application, a review of the applicant's qualifications, driving record and criminal history check, and an oral board interview. Selected candidates will be subject to an extensive level 4 background investigation, and must successfully pass a psychological evaluation and physical exam prior to employment. Each step of the process must be passed before the applicant will be moved to the next step.
