The Facilities and Logistics Division (F&L) is responsible for providing both direct and indirect maintenance and repair services to City owned and operated facilities using in-house skilled trade-workers, maintenance contracts and purchasing operation. F&L is responsible for monitoring DHS shelters as it relates to the maintenance of building systems. The F&L guides shelter staff on ways to improve facility conditions and the goal of this unit is to ensure funds are being spent on preventive and general maintenance to avoid premature failure of building systems. The Facilities & Logistics Division is recruiting for two (2) Plumbers who will: * Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems including piping of all kinds, fittings, fixtures, and drainage systems. * Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems. * Inspect plumbing systems and identify issues such as leaks, clogs, or worn parts. * Repair or replace broken pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing components. * Test plumbing systems for leaks and other problems. * Collaborate with contractors, construction workers, and other professionals on plumbing installation projects. * Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal plumbing codes and regulations * Provide estimates for plumbing work and order necessary materials and supplies. * Maintain accurate records of work performed, including details of repairs and installations. * Respond to plumbing emergencies and provide timely, effective solutions. * Stay up to date with the latest plumbing techniques, tools, and technologies. * Operate a motor vehicle. Work Schedule: Sunday through Wednesday - 11 am - 8:30 pm, Thursday 11 am-2:30 pm Position Responsibilities: * Install and repair plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, electric and gas-fired water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners * Repair and maintain plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, replacing packing or valves, mending burst pipes, and opening clogged drains * Assemble and modify piping systems composed of metals such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and non-metals such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand tools and power tools * Install pipe hangers and anchors as required * Insulate piping with adequate insulating material to prevent sweating and heating losses * Join pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, welding, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints * Erect scaffolding or set up ladders to perform tasks above ground * Keep work areas neat and clean * Remove and/or install hydraulic systems, gas line systems, hot and cold risers, water supply and distribution to plumbing fixtures * Install new plumbing drain lines and indirect connections to water lines in multi-floor buildings * Read and understand blueprints/riser diagrams * Keep up with new trade skills and technologies * Perform all the duties of a plumber * Install new and/or additions to standpipe and sprinkler systems * Assign duties to staff and provide routine guidance * Perform duties assigned as a member of the Fire Brigade * Perform other related duties as assigned Experience & Educational Background: * A High School Diploma * 4 years of experience in the plumbing trade are required * Construction industry experience is preferred * Standpipe/sprinkler system Certificate of Fitness is preferred * A valid state-issued driver's license is preferred Skills & Competencies: * Must possess the strength and dexterity needed to perform the job and the physical ability to move equipment as necessary * Must adhere to operational safety rules and regulations as deemed by the University * Must be able to follow directives and possess good communication skills and ability to interact with building/office occupants effectively * Must be able to effectively provide direction to lower-level staff * Respirator Fit Testing may be required Salary Range: Salary Range: Grade 8 1199 New Hire rate:$28.95 and 1199 One Year of Service rate $29.54 About Us: Yeshiva University is dedicated to academic excellence, intellectual exploration, and the advancement of timeless values that shape and impact lives. : The Plumber II performs a wide variety of journeyman level plumbing maintenance and installation work including the layout of jobs sufficiently complex to require advance planning and the maintenance of necessary supplies and records. Work is performed with considerable independence, but in most instances, results from written or oral instructions. The incumbent may function as a lead worker on specific projects or as part of a crew and may supervise a number of lower level maintenance and labor employees. The journeyman is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade, with the full knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques. The journeyman assists in the planning of repairs and alterations, making estimates of material costs and staffing requirements. The journeyman has responsibility for determining methods, techniques, materials (take off list), and devices best suited to complete projects. Work at this grade may be completed with little or no check during progress or on completion. Supervisor may check overall work to see that it meets trade standards. Responsibilities: * Installs, repairs and maintains plumbing fixtures, work stands, toilets, showers, drains, sinks, radiators and kitchen, hospital and other equipment requiring plumbing connections to ensure that equipment works efficiently and effectively. * Repairs and replaces piping systems, valves and fittings to extend the useful life of equipment and to keep the equipment operating properly. * Repairs and maintains a variety of plumbing connections, conveyances and systems; including high and low pressure steam systems for proper operation and to extend the useful life of the system. * Repairs, maintains and installs soldered and brazed connections, fittings, etc., so they will perform safely and efficiently. * Cuts and threads pipes so that pipes may be joined. * Pours leaded joints on sanitary lines to seal them so no leakage will occur; * Performs an immediate inspection in the event of a plumbing or related emergency and takes proper corrective action. * Clears sewer and plumbing stoppages. * Lays out jobs making rough plans and sketches when needed and interprets job orders, diagrams, specifications, etc. * Maintains work area in a clean, orderly and safe condition. * Maintains records of work done, supplies used and supplies needed, requisitions supplies. * Recommends new equipment and methods to improve work performance. * Performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergency situations, as required. * Assists in securing information for budget formulation. * Depending on work location, may operate equipment and devices, participate in snow removal, etc., as assigned. Qualifications/Requirements: Experience: Either: (a) high school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience in the trade; or (b) four years full time experience under a journeyman which provided training and experience equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program. Education: High School Diploma or GED equivilant Licenses / Certifications: (1) Possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate to the equipment operated. Other: Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology associated with the plumbing trade; good knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; good knowledge of the applicable provisions of the state codes and such local codes as apply to the trade; ability to lay out a variety of plumbing jobs involving water, gas, air, and high and low pressure steam systems in an economical and efficient manner specifying the amounts and types of materials to be used; ability to cope with a variety of plumbing emergencies; ability to coordinate work with the work of other trades; ability to work effectively with supervisory and subordinate personnel in carrying out the duties of the position; resourcefulness and imagination in meeting new and unusual plumbing problems; initiative in carrying out plumbing work and in seeking improved work methods; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; physical strength and agility; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
