Role overview:
+ Assess job to be accomplished: reviews blueprints, diagrams, work orders; discusses project with customer; resolves appropriate materials to be used; capture equipment, tools and materials needed; prepares work area. Resolve type and size of pipe to use and special fittings vital for maintenance, repair and construction
+ Perform either maintenance, repair, replacement or installation and piping of water gases, drainage and venting systems, fire standpipe, and sprinkler systems, and various plumbing fixtures (e.g., sinks, toilets, water heaters). Build/fit plumbing parts to accommodate job needs
+ Respond to customer questions or requests demonstrating courteous and professional customer service
+ Maintain a clean, orderly and secure work environment. Ensure accurate care and use of tools, equipment, supplies, and materials
+ Work various shifts Nights and Weekends when needed
+ 3 Years hospital experience preferred
Key Qualifications & Core Skills:
+ Sufficient knowledge to handle assignments of routine and non-routine difficulty with minimal supervision
+ Knowledge of NYC Plumbing Codes
+ Knowledge of medical gas systems preferred
+ New York City Fire Department Certificate of Fitness for Oxygen acetylene torches G60 - F60
+ Ability to operate power tools such as: pipe threading machine, drill press, drills, electric saws, sewer routers, fuseal machines and coring machines
+ Ability to bolt, solder, caulk, braze, cut passage holes in walls and floors with electric hand drill and narrow blade saw
+ Ability to read blueprints and communicate effectively
+ Medical Gas Installer preferred but not necessary

Collaborating with other public agencies and not-for-profit partners, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it occurs, reduce street homelessness, and assist New Yorkers to transition from shelter into appropriate permanent housing.
The Facilities and Logistics Division (F&L) is responsible for providing both direct and indirect maintenance and repair services to City owned and operated facilities using in-house skilled trade-workers, maintenance contracts and purchasing operation. F&L is responsible for monitoring DHS shelters as it relates to the maintenance of building systems. The F&L guides shelter staff on ways to improve facility conditions and the goal of this unit is to ensure funds are being spent on preventive and general maintenance to avoid premature failure of building systems.
The Facilities & Logistics Division is recruiting for two (2) Plumbers who will:
* Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems including piping of all kinds, fittings, fixtures, and drainage systems.
* Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems.
* Inspect plumbing systems and identify issues such as leaks, clogs, or worn parts.
* Repair or replace broken pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing components.
* Test plumbing systems for leaks and other problems.
* Collaborate with contractors, construction workers, and other professionals on plumbing installation projects.
* Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal plumbing codes and regulations
* Provide estimates for plumbing work and order necessary materials and supplies.
* Maintain accurate records of work performed, including details of repairs and installations.
* Respond to plumbing emergencies and provide timely, effective solutions.

Minimum Qualifications
(1) Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber acquired within the last ten years; or
(2) Not less than three years of full-time satisfactory experience described in "1" above plus sufficient full-time experience as a plumber's helper or apprentice, or training of a relevant nature acquired in an approved trade school, technical school or vocational high school, to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable plumber experience.
The apprenticeship must be recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor or any apprenticeship council which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. The schooling must be approved by a state's Department of Education or comparable agency. : The Plumber II performs a wide variety of journeyman level plumbing maintenance and installation work including the layout of jobs sufficiently complex to require advance planning and the maintenance of necessary supplies and records. Work is performed with considerable independence, but in most instances, results from written or oral instructions. The incumbent may function as a lead worker on specific projects or as part of a crew and may supervise a number of lower level maintenance and labor employees. The journeyman is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade, with the full knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques. The journeyman assists in the planning of repairs and alterations, making estimates of material costs and staffing requirements. The journeyman has responsibility for determining methods, techniques, materials (take off list), and devices best suited to complete projects. Work at this grade may be completed with little or no check during progress or on completion. Supervisor may check overall work to see that it meets trade standards.
Responsibilities:
* Installs, repairs and maintains plumbing fixtures, work stands, toilets, showers, drains, sinks, radiators and kitchen, hospital and other equipment requiring plumbing connections to ensure that equipment works efficiently and effectively.
* Repairs and replaces piping systems, valves and fittings to extend the useful life of equipment and to keep the equipment operating properly.
* Repairs and maintains a variety of plumbing connections, conveyances and systems; including high and low pressure steam systems for proper operation and to extend the useful life of the system.
* Repairs, maintains and installs soldered and brazed connections, fittings, etc., so they will perform safely and efficiently.
* Cuts and threads pipes so that pipes may be joined.

* Performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergency situations, as required.
* Assists in securing information for budget formulation.

Qualifications/Requirements:
Experience:
Either: (a) high school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience in the trade; or (b) four years full time experience under a journeyman which provided training and experience equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program.
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivilant
Licenses / Certifications:
(1) Possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate to the equipment operated.
Other:
Thorough knowledge of the tools, techniques and terminology associated with the plumbing trade; good knowledge of the accident and safety precautions of the trade; good knowledge of the applicable provisions of the state codes and such local codes as apply to the trade; ability to lay out a variety of plumbing jobs involving water, gas, air, and high and low pressure steam systems in an economical and efficient manner specifying the amounts and types of materials to be used; ability to cope with a variety of plumbing emergencies; ability to coordinate work with the work of other trades; ability to work effectively with supervisory and subordinate personnel in carrying out the duties of the position; resourcefulness and imagination in meeting new and unusual plumbing problems; initiative in carrying out plumbing work and in seeking improved work methods; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; physical strength and agility; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. Special Requirements: Depending on work assignment, must meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, and will be required to meet federal, state and local standards with respect to health and safety.
