Position Summary:
Under general supervision, performs diagnostic, service, and installation of plumbing in residential and light-commercial environments. Holds plumbing and/or gas license as required by governmental regulations. Ensures that work is performed in accordance with relevant codes. Key Responsibilities:

Installs underground storm, sanitary, or water piping systems, extending piping as needed to connect fixtures and plumbing
Reviews blueprints, building codes, or specifications to determine work details or procedures. Interprets drawings and specifications to determine layout requirements. Major Job Activities:

Job Description
Under the direct supervision of a qualified journey level 7347 Plumber, as a General Plumber Apprentice II, you will learn the operation, repair and maintenance of water mains, pipes, meters, fire hydrants, gates, and valves.
Important and Essential Duties:
As a General Plumber Apprentice II, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
Assist with plumbing duties including building alterations, maintenance and repair projects, and other appurtenant and miscellaneous structures.
Installing, alter, replace, and repair plumbing, such as water, sewage, and drainage systems.
Assist with cutting, bending, assembling, and installing various pipes, fittings, and fixtures for water, sanitary, drainage, heating, gas, and other plumbing systems which involve the performance at hand, bench and maintenance plumbing tasks.
Assist with installing, altering, repairing, or replacing all plumbing fixtures.
Assist with threading, reaming, assembling, caulking, soldering, and welding of various pipes and component parts.
Assist with installing, altering, and repairing valves, fittings, and other plumbing parts and equipment, including such items as hot water boilers, sterilizers, steam tables, sinks, thermal control apparatus, sprinkler heads, hydrants, and service pipes.
Assist with repairing and installing new water and drainage lines and waste and sewage pipes.
Assist with checking plumbing fixtures for leaks and other defects; opening and cleaning clogged drains, pipes, and traps.
Maintains simple working records and reports as directed.
Working Conditions:
Requires progressive responsibility for carrying our duties according to instructions. The nature of work involves considerable dexterity in the use of fingers, hands, limbs and body with exposure to physical and working conditions where moderately serious injuries may occur.

Education:
Applicant must be a current indentured UA Local 38 Plumber Apprentice working for the City and County of San Francisco who has successfully completed training and related instruction for 7465 General Plumber Apprentice I; OR
Applicant must be a current indentured UA Local 38 Plumber Apprentice who has successfully completed at least two and a half (2.5) years (4,140 hours) of their combined work process and classroom study.
License and Certification:
Possession of a valid California driver's license

Applicants must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license with
no restrictions
that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.
Incumbent will work at municipal facilities including San Bruno Jail, Hall of Justice, Airport and Port. Plumbers are required to work at all of these facilities, which require security clearance at the time of appointment in order for the department to maintain service orders and for work to be performed on time. Security clearance is based on an individual's background.
Desirable Qualifications:
The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify candidates advancing to the interview process and/or to identify job finalist(s) at the end of the selection process when referred for hiring.
Construction experience.
Utility or house plumbing experience.
Experience working with hand tools.
Experience soldering copper pipes.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Upon being hired, the apprentice, the employer Department of Human Resources and the Joint Apprenticeship Committee must sign an apprenticeship indenture. This is an agreement with the employer City and the Apprentice, which is filed with the State of California Department of Industrial Relations Division of Apprenticeship Standards, that the employer will train the apprentice in accordance with the apprenticeship standards and the collective bargaining agreement or MOU.
Physical skills require considerable physical effort in the installation, repair and maintenance of water mains, pipes, meters, fire hydrants, gate valves, the ability to lift heavy objects up to 55lbs; physical stamina to stand, stoop, bend, climb ladders and for confined space entry in tight crawl spaces.
