BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. Graduate Training
Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. * An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med) invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track position in Family Medicine - Maternal health. This position has a unique focus on working with Medicaid as a policy consultant to expand care and improve health outcomes in Nevada. This position also includes a clinical service component, a teaching component, and the opportunity to advance programmatic initiatives as described below.
This role will have various opportunities to support the growth of UNR Med and clinical care; goals include engaging in interprofessional collaboration to develop birthing assistance and/or doula support mechanisms, development of a Family Medicine Obstetrics Fellowship, engagement with underserved patient populations at various clinical sites such as Community Health Alliance, Planned Parenthood, or Tribal Health.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate mission, vision and values alignment with UNR Med, Medicaid, and Renown Health. We value innovation, creativity, and commitment to improving health equity and access. Duties and Responsibilities
Medicaid
Serve as a clinical expert and advisor on maternal health to state Medicaid officials in support of improving outcomes for women during pregnancy in Nevada;
Attend and actively participate in regular meetings with state Medicaid officials and stakeholders as a subject matter expert and clinical program advisor on the unique needs of women and the needs of their families and caregivers;
Recommend suggested program changes and strategies to state Medicaid officials that can be used to attract and retain a qualified health care workforce for meeting the needs of women, statewide;
Serve on any state advisory boards, committees, and workgroups, when needed, as a representative of the university in support of the state's efforts to improve outcomes for women's maternal health in Nevada with unmet health needs;
Conduct academic research and literature reviews and draft summaries of research findings in support of improving the quality of care for women with maternal health needs;
Provide clinical-based reviews and policy recommendations for the state's efforts to increase access to community-based treatment, therapies and related services for women with maternal health needs with the goal of reducing poor health outcomes.
Review proposed and current Medicaid benefit coverage, payment and utilization management policies and make clinical-based recommendations that will improve outcomes for women with maternal health needs;
Provide expert guidance to state Medicaid officials on the appropriate standards of care and clinical needs for women with maternal health needs in the development of new programs and policies at Medicaid;
Develop and host trainings for other health care providers and stakeholders on best practices for providing care to women with maternal health needs in Nevada and support Medicaid's efforts to engage providers in appropriate care; and
Serve as a clinical expert advisor to state Medicaid officials in the review of certain appeals by recipients or providers in response to state denials for payment or coverage, where the core issue in the appeal presents complex clinical questions and requires the medical knowledge of a physician.
Coordinate with key staff at state-contracted managed care plans, like the women's maternal health medical officers, as requested by the state, for women's maternal health priority projects.
Maternal Health Education and Training
Family Medicine - OB/GYN training and education for current medical students, residents and other health professions students at UNR Med and other health professions schools, including potential Interprofessional Education (IPE) opportunities to develop opportunities to expand the rural workforce serving Medicaid patients
Outpatient Family Medicine - OB/GYN Care
Deliver patient care as a Family Medicine - OB/GYN to increase access for Medicaid patients.
