Dispenses medication in response to a physician's prescription exercising professional judgment in accordance with established policies, procedures, standards, and government regulations to ensure appropriate drug therapy for optimal patient care. The Pharmacy Resident counsels, assists and educates physicians, nurses and community on appropriate medication use, doses, side effects and precautions. Directs support personnel to maintain good organization and efficient order processing. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served. Doctor of Pharmacy Degree and 1,000 hours of internship under a licensed preceptor required All residents within the Department of Pharmacy must be licensed in good standing by the Board of Pharmacy in the State of Michigan within an adequate timeframe to allow nine months of full practice experience during the residency. Residents are also expected to obtain a Controlled Substance license within this time period. Residents that are not licensed in Michigan will not be able to practice independently and must maintain a Michigan Pharmacist Intern license during the interim period between beginning the residency and obtaining pharmacist license. ACLS Certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment and maintained through the residency Basic computer word processing and pharmacy-rellated software skills Work which is constantly and exceptionally tiring mentally and/or visually. Identifies any apparent conflicts within the patient's profile or drug therapy program. * Prepares or oversees the preparation and dispensing of IV medications. Evaluates prescriptions for accuracy of drug dose and schedule of medication, and enters information on patient profile. Prepares large volume parenterals, IV piggybacks, total parenteral nutrition, chemotherapeutic and antineoplastic agents, IV push medications, irrigations, patient controlled analgesics, ophthalmic preparations, and enteral feedings. * Assists with overseeing the work of Unit dose and IV Additive Technicians the in performance of their regular duties. Ensures that all drugs and solutions prepared by technicians are accurate and prepared under proper conditions. Checks and verifies accuracy of medications in carts; releases carts for delivery to patient care areas. * Prepares and checks stock drugs for nursing units and other departments. Monitors pharmacy and nursing unit medications on a regular basis in order to see that all drugs are current and in adequate supply. * May provide pharmacokinetic evaluation and dosing of patients on specific medications and monitors patient progress.     Provides services related to the field of pharmacy under the supervision of a pharmacist. Prepares and dispenses drugs and other pharmaceutical supplies under strict supervision and in compliance with established procedures and standards. Essential Functions and Responsibilities: * Dispenses and compounds prescribed medications or drugs for patients care in keeping with proper legal rules and under the supervision of a pharmacist. * Reviews and monitors medications and orders written by physicians to see if they are safe and effective. * Prepares labels and dispenses medications for patients in accordance to the physicians' prescriptions and also follows the government regulations related to dispensing of drugs and narcotics. * Maintains the required records of dispensing * Compounds medications by following standard formulas and processes like weighing, measuring and mixing chemicals * Maintains the systems that charge or credit for medications * May answer queries and give information to customers on a drug, its side effects, dosage and storage. * Follows the procedures of storage, quality assurance, security, and disposal of hazardous materials. * May analyze medications to determine identity, purity and strength. * Performs other related duties as required and directed. Required: * Accepted as a student in an approved college/school of pharmacy in which the candidate is currently enrolled. * State Educational Limited Pharmacist (Intern) License.
