* Are there some kind of maintained stock levels based on the dogs breed? What I mean by that: 1 Siberian husky pup to be replenished every x months or order a new siberian husky after one has been sold. * Do you think this AMA would have been more successful if you didn't mention Petland as the store? * Most companies operate on shrinkage/leakage. How many puppies are acceptable losses given a 6 month period? http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2012/oct/09/9-puppies-stolen-plano-frisco-petland-stores/ BTW, thanks for answering.

1) Between my general manager and myself we play it by ear when it comes to getting specific puppies. People will come in the store and ask for a husky. Soon enough we get one in and it sells in a few days. We do keep track of which puppies sell faster than others, thats why if you go into a Petland a majority of the puppies you see will be deisgner small breeds such as: ***-tzu, chihuahuas, and yorkies. 2) Yes..... I understand why people would hate Petland as a company but idk I always imagined I would do a AMA and get like tons of upvotes...... Nope.avi 3) Well typically we get 1 or 2 puppies every year that unfortunately pass away because they get parvo or hypoglycemia from negligent puppy owners. To break it down, for every $1,200 we sell in the puppy department we can buy about 4-5 other puppies.

* What's the longest time a puppy has been living at your store? * What happens when they are deemed unsellable? * What's the criteria for an unsellable puppy? * Is there a commission for each puppy sale? * Is there any reason why the stores don't make one super container to place all the puppies (vs individual cells)?

1) I remember having a ***-tzu stay at the store for I think 3 months. Nobody wanted him because he was teething and he constantly kept biting people. 2) When a puppy is deemed unsellable there are a few things my store does. We either adopt the puppy out to a family who understands that the puppy may encounter some kind of hereditary or congenital disease, or we send the puppy back to the breeder. I have no idea what happens to the puppies who get sent back. 3) We grade every puppy that comes into the store. Our veterinarian comes in and does a physical on the puppy. Some puppies require special inspections such as bulldogs or mastiffs. In those cases we grade our puppies on a scale of 1-5 (1 being sellable and 5 being rejected) if the puppy passes a 1.5 we cannot sell the puppy and we either send the puppy back to get a refund or we adopt the puppy out at cost. 4) YES!! Being employed at Petland is a very sales driven job. Everything is commisionable thats why our puppies can range from prices. It is literally the Pet Counselors job to set a price for the puppy. Even fish department is commission. 5) Disease, some puppies we get in will have kennel cough and basically its our job to give them anything they need to recover. Imagine a pre-school if one kid gets sick, chances are the rest of the class will get sick. By keeping the puppies in separate rooms we reduce the chance of any kind of bacterial infection. Also, sometimes we get really douchey puppies so we wouldn't want a Siberian Husky to boss around a Chihuahua.
