MEDIC RESPONSIBILITIES • Assess each call situation to determine best course of action and appropriate protocol.
• Utilize medical equipment and procedures including defibrillator, EKG monitor, oxygen and suction devices, intravenous fluids, CPR and other procedures and medications as required to provide advanced medical care.
• Develop and utilize triage skills to provide optimal efficiency during calls.
• Provide patient care according to clinical protocols and safety requirements.
• Lift and move patients as required to provide optimum care.
• Communicate with receiving facility to receive medical direction and to provide critical information.
• Act as team leader and take responsibility for scene and unit management as needed.
• Drive the ambulance and provide map reading support to minimize call response time.
• Continuously maintain all required certifications.
• Monitor and maintain the general condition of the unit, keep it clean and stocked for optimal call response to maintain the image of AMR.
• Document activities with regard to patient care and billing completely to ensure appropriate information is available regarding each call.
• Follow policies and procedures regarding out-of-chute times and turnaround times.
• Consider patient status and insurance preferred facilities when determining transportation destinations.
• Reports immediately to the on duty supervisor and/or account manager any incident involving a negative customer and/or patient interaction.
• Read medication/prescription labels and directions for usage in quick, accurate, and expedient manner.
• Communicate verbally with patients and significant others in various environments to interview patient, family members, and bystanders.
• Discern deviations/changes in eye/skin coloration due to patient's condition and to the treatment given.
• Converse with dispatcher and EMS providers via phone or radio as to status of patient.

To be considered as a Firefighter/Paramedic Lateral, applicants must be actively employed by another agency in order to transfer.
Under supervision, the Firefighter/Paramedic will respond to fire alarms and other emergencies; render basic and advanced life support services, maintain equipment and quarters; and perform other related duties as required.

Administer medications, by intravenous, intramuscular or topical means; perform electrical defibrillation; operate radiotelephone equipment and communicate medical information to base hospital medical personnel and others; and serve as a preceptor for paramedic and emergency medical technician trainees; compile necessary reports and records and drive an ambulance vehicle. Extend and operate firehose in training and fire suppression situations; place, raise, lower and climb ladders in training, fire suppression and rescue situations; assist in salvage of property and contents of occupancies affected by or threatened by fire, smoke, or water damage; and assist in extinguishment and overhaul of fires. Clean, test and maintain fire apparatus, fire hoses, and related equipment; clean and maintain fire station facilities; conduct fire prevention inspections and public fire safety education programs; participate in and contribute to drills, training exercises and other related fire prevention activities; maintain current knowledge of fire department rules and regulations, fire hazards, fire suppression strategies and techniques, and related subjects; subject to recall during emergencies and non-emergency times during off-duty hours.
Qualification Guidelines
To qualify for this classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities, and enable the individual to successfully perform the essential job functions of the position. A typical combination is:
Education and/or Experience:
Graduation from high school or attainment of GED or CHSPE certificate is required, California State Basic Fire Academy graduate. Completion of a certified paramedic program is required. Within three (3) months of appointment, employee must be accredited by Los Angeles County. Ability to obtain a firefighter “F” endorsement to drive and operate all emergency fire department apparatus within the first year of employment and to maintain a valid driver's license with firefighter “F” endorsement are required as conditions of employment. Applicant must be 18 years of age at time of appointment. A California State Firefighter I certificate, at the time of application is highly desirable.
Medical Standards
:
Must be capable of meeting pre-employment physical standards required for the position. Applicants must be in good physical condition as determined by a City administered medical examination, with weight in proportion to height, far visual acuity shall be at least 20/30 binocular corrected with contact lenses or spectacles, and uncorrected shall be at least 20/100 binocular for wearers of hard contacts or spectacles. Successful long-term soft contact lens wearers shall not be subject to uncorrected criterion. Peripheral visual field performance without correction shall be 140 degrees in the horizontal meridian in each eye. Color vision must be adequate to identify red, green, and yellow colors. Hearing deficit in the pure tone thresholds must be no greater than 25db in three of four frequencies, 30db in one of three frequencies, and have an average greater than 30db for four frequencies. Frequencies related to hearing test, 500hz, 1000hz, 2000hz, and 3000hz.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
* Performs and records daily checks of Sierra Madre Fire Department emergency vehicles to ascertain readiness in accordance with Sierra Madre Fire Department, County of Los Angeles, State of California, and the U.S. Department of Transportation
* Responds to emergency incidents and performs Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support functions that are within their scope of practice
* Maintain all EMS equipment on or in support of the Department Rescue Ambulances and Paramedic Assessment Engine companies
* Perform daily cleanup of the buildings and grounds of the Sierra Madre Fire Department
* Perform computer data entry for incident responses including all required EMS and patient care reports; inspection documentation; daily electronic logs; training reports; and any items deemed to require documentation
* Inspects assigned building and development projects for conformance with applicable laws, codes and regulations relating to fire protection and life safety; conducts special inspections and investigations of existing structures as they relate to fire code to insure compliance with Title 19 and 24, and NFPA Standards 10, 13, 17A, 22, 24, 25, 70, 72 and 101
* Conducts weed and brush abatement inspections
* Assists in fire prevention preplanning, Determines the size, shape, and layout associated with buildings and areas
* Assists in the medical training of the Sierra Madre Fire Department
* Performs First Aid and CPR Training, including use of an AED to the community
* Conduct station tours
* Performs other related duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Firefighter/Paramedic- LATERAL
* 18 years of age or older
* Possession of valid California Driver's License, with a good driving record
* Possession of valid CPR Certification issued by the American Red Cross, or the American Heart Association
* Possession of valid California State Paramedic License (EMT-P), with local accreditation at time of appointment
* Certificate of completion from a State of California Accredited Fire Academy or equivalent (i.e. IFSAC, Pro Board) is required.
* Must possess 4 years of continuous employment with an established fire department performing suppression duties in a recognized fire agency in California.
Firefighter/Paramedic- ENTRY LEVEL
* 18 years of age or older
* Possession of valid California Driver's License, with a good driving record
* Possession of valid CPR Certification issued by the American Red Cross, or the American Heart Association
* Possession of valid California State Paramedic License (EMT-P), with local accreditation at time of appointment
* Certificate of completion from a State of California Accredited Fire Academy or equivalent (i.e. IFSAC, Pro Board) is required.

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, crawl, twist, climb, and lift 125 lbs.; exposure to cold, fire, heat, smoke, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, communicable diseases, biohazard materials, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for shift work, on-call, and stand-by.

The Selection Process:

Emergency Services:
All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
