Summary Description
DEFINITIONUnder general supervision, performs firefighting activities to protect life and property; responds to a variety of fire and emergency and non-emergency calls including structure fires, traffic collisions, hazardous materials incidents, building collapses, and wildland fires; operates a variety of fire suppression and life-saving equipment; provides Advanced ORBasic Life Support including medical assessment, treatment, and stabilization of the critically injured; maintains control, manages and directs patient care at the scene of a pre-hospital emergency; provides training and instruction as appropriate; performs station and equipment maintenance; and, performs a variety of other duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds to fire calls and participates in fire extinguishment, ventilation, salvage, rescue, and other operations; operates various firefighting/control equipment such as pumps, hoses, ladders, and extinguishers; lays hose lines and directs water streams into fire; participates in mop up and overhaul operations.
Provides and directs fast, efficient Advanced or Basic Life Support to the ill and injured utilizing all basic and advanced abilities and techniques, including but not limited to: the placement of peripheral and intra-osseous lines, multi-lumen airways, and endotracheal intubations; needle thoracentesis; fluid and drug therapy; cardiac monitoring and EKG interpretations, transcutaneous pacing, defibrillation, and cardioversion.
Renders emergency medical assistance; performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation and assists with electrical defibrillation; lifts and transports injured persons; administers intravenous saline, glucose and volume expanding agents; obtains blood for laboratory analysis; interprets cardiac arrhythmias; performs pulmonary ventilation by use of airway adjuncts; administers drugs;
Operates voice and biomedical telemetry communication systems and equipment; assists in childbirth; drives medical rescue vehicles under emergency conditions; prepares and presents to employees and the public demonstrations and classes in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other subjects relating to medical assistance.
Recognizes and understands a medical emergency and makes reasonable and acceptable differential analysis.
Understands and anticipates the pharmacological treatment of critically ill and injured patients.
Understands and anticipates potentially life-threatening sequelae of non-cardiac emergencies and institutes appropriate emergency therapy where essential for the preservation of life.
Responsible for quality patient-care as established by the Department.
Maintains effective appropriate communication with on-scene pre-hospital and first-responder personnel and the base hospital personnel/physician as necessary.
Completes required documentation.
Restocks supplies and maintains emergency vehicles and equipment in proper working condition.
Inspects, cleans, and services various firefighting equipment and apparatus; performs routine and preventive maintenance on equipment as necessary; assists in maintaining clean and orderly conditions in and about the fire station.
Attends and participates in special drills and other training activities; conducts and participates in training exercises; develops skills in fire suppression, medical aid, apparatus operation, and other related areas.
Participates in inspections of public and commercial buildings for fire prevention and target hazard identification and review; evaluates water system capabilities.
Assists with programs such as fire investigation, pre-fire planning, and maintaining pertinent City maps.
May be subject to call-back during non-duty hours.
Gives informative and educational tours of the fire station to school children and other citizens; explains the functions of the Fire Department; and participates in other public relations activities.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINESEducation and/or Experience:Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance as a Fire Fighter/Paramedic. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)certificate.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE AND/OR OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSPossession of a valid California Driver's License and maintain a satisfactory driving record.Completion of a California State Fire Marshal approved Fire Fighter I Academy and/or possession of a California Fire Fighter I Certification with demonstrated skills and abilities therewith.Must possess and maintain the following at the point of application:
State of California Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic License (EMT-P) issued by The California Emergency Medical Services Authority;
American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS);
Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider or American Red Cross Professional Rescuer card.
Must possess and maintain the following prior to beginning of full-time employment:
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification or PEPP Certificate;

A valid local paramedic accreditation must be obtained within 3 months of employment.
PHYSICAL FITNESS: Candidates must have a current passing score on the CPAT or PAT/Biddle at the time of application AND at the time of certification to be considered for hiring. A CPAT or PAT/Biddle score is valid for one year. No candidate will be allowed to sit for the written test until proof of a valid passing CPAT score is submitted.

Recruitment Timeline

Ocean Swim Test: Tentatively scheduled on March 19, 2025. Passing candidates will be invited to the oral interview.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AT TIME OF HIRE:

Possess a California paramedic licensure with accreditation in San Diego County at time of hire, all of which must be maintained for the duration of their assignment.

POSITION:
Reserve firefighters, under direct supervision, attend scheduled drills and perform a myriad of firefighting and EMS skills including but not limited to: responding to structure fires, wildland fires, vehicle accidents and medical aids. Other duties may include vehicle and apparatus maintenance as well as station maintenance. During scheduled ride-along shifts the reserve may be assigned to an engine company or a transporting ALS unit.
TRAINING:
Each new reserve firefighter will be required to attend an orientation prior to scheduling their shifts. Upon completion of the orientation, the reserve firefighters will attend a reserve academy consisting of 8 days of training on a myriad of firefighting skills. The reserves will come together collectively to schedule which days they will complete the reserve academy. Upon completion of the reserve academy, reserves will be able to schedule shifts according to District policy. Reserves are assigned a task book consisting of firefighting and station tasks they are responsible for completing. The reserve program is very flexible and willing to work with the reserves and their busy schedules. The District understands the rigorous steps to becoming a firefighter and will help in anyway shape or form. The District is willing to work with reserves who are in the fire academy and paramedic school. We are dedicated to getting the reserves the necessary experience to become successful firefighter/paramedics.
SALARY RANGE: Unpaid, volunteer
SCHEDULE: At least four (4) 24-hour shifts per quarter and attend one (1) Saturday drill per month.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
● 18 years of age or older
● Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
● Possess a CA Class C Driver's License
- Ambulance driver certificate (must have by start date)

Vighter's HCPs work alongside uniformed CBP Agents/Officers at numerous locations near the border in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, and Florida. The medical staff must be capable of providing health care services for persons of all ages, to include infants, children, adults, and pregnant females. Candidates must be comfortable working in a detention setting. Services may be provided in a field setting with minimal facilities, a soft-sided (tent-type) facility, or a secure detention facility, such as a US Border Patrol Station. Education, Licensure/Certification & Experience:
Must have a minimum of one year of experience in direct patient care as a licensed/certified EMT.

Emergency Medical Technician Responsibilities:
Provide EMT shift coverage based on call volume needs.
Responds to instructions from dispatch and drive the emergency vehicle to specified locations.
Determines nature and extent of illness or injury, or magnitude of catastrophe, in order to establish the basic life support procedures needed to be followed, basing decisions on statements of persons involved, the examination of victim or victims, and knowledge of the emergency medical practice.
Removes or assists in the removal of victims from vehicles, or the scene of an accident or catastrophe, and assists in the transfer of victims to receiving facilities.
Takes and records patient's vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate.
Administers prescribed treatment at the site of an emergency, or in specially equipped vehicles, performing such activities as first aid, immobilization of injuries, application of splints, administration of oxygen, treatment of minor wounds or abrasions, or administration of basic life support procedures.
Assists admitting and billing personnel to obtain and record information related to the patient's vital statistics and to establish the necessity for medical transportation.
Completes field care report patient billing /trip ticket and daily driver's unit checkout form.
Assist with equipment, medication and supply inventory management
On-call coverage.
