OPERS company history timeline

1938

In 1938, the legislature expanded system membership to include employees of counties, municipalities, public libraries and health, park, sanitary and conservancy districts.

1941

In 1941, membership was made optional for elected officials.

1972

Automation efforts started at OPERS in 1972, improving disbursement of pension benefits by replacing manual systems of locating records and posting ledger cards with an online system to speed access to account information.

1974

In 1974, OPERS began pre-funding health care and began paying premiums for retirees.

2019

31, 2019, OPERS is the largest state pension fund in Ohio, and the 12th-largest public retirement system and 15th-largest retirement system in the United States
