Performs a variety of unskilled road and bridge maintenance and construction duties requiring the use of various equipment and hand tools. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Performs a variety of road and bridge maintenance and construction duties. May work on one or more crews, including asphalt, general maintenance, truck string, drainage, and traffic and signs. Operates industrial tractors with mower attachments, various types of compaction rollers, and pickup trucks; performs routine maintenance, including lubing and greasing as necessary. Performs manual labor using various hand tools, including shovels, picks, and axes. Lifts and carries jackhammers and connected air hoses. Installs and removes snow plow and harnesses. Patches asphalt using crack sealing equipment and performs asphaltic concrete patching on paved roads. Carries asphalt or cement chunks to and from sites and vehicles. Operates self-propelled hand rollers; may assist with traffic striping. Performs flagging duties. Removes debris from County rights-of-way; trims trees, shrubbery, and other vegetation. Loads and unloads small equipment and material. Carries bags of cement. Collects trash from containers. Responds to on-call after-hours emergencies, such as snow removal, flood repair, tornado clean-up, or other natural disasters, or safety needs for the motoring public. Performs other duties as required. Supervision Exercised: This classification does not have supervisory authority and requires no supervision or direction of others. Scope of Work: The Heavy Equipment Operator operates multiple types of heavy equipment in support of base operations. Responsibilities: Operate various pieces of large equipment in accordance with company procedures and safety regulations. Operate heavy equipment as required, including but not limited to the following activities in various types of terrain (dirt, snow, etc.): Excavate, load, or move dirt, gravel, or other materials. Perform various duties such as road patching, dirt hauling, fence repair, remove fallen trees, and support the other shops as needed. Read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans. Ensure proper operation of equipment by performing regular checks on their functionality. Document regular maintenance checks to maintain adequate records of equipment performance. Provide preventative maintenance to ensure equipment is safe and operating properly. Regularly clean equipment to preserve its quality and functionality. Perform minor repairs on equipment issues. Report needs for larger repairs to the appropriate parties. As part of the snow removal team, incumbent will perform section stand by duties and snow removal operations to include but not limited to snow plowing, snow removal, load liquid deicer tanks to apply deicing chemicals to streets and report usages on both granular and liquid chemicals and work alternate and extended shift schedules during snow events when necessary. Abide by all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as all company safety procedures. Commit to the overall safety of the work environment by always taking extra precautions to work with the utmost care and consideration. Adhere to company policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Minimum Requirements: Class A or B CDL preferred. Must have experience operating but not limited to the following equipment: dozers, sweepers, bucket trucks, graders, bucket loaders, etc. Must have a minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of related experience and/or formal vocational/technical training in a variety of building or utility trades. Each complete year of accredited college education in a related field may be substituted for the equivalent number of years of required experience. Must be able to successfully complete a National Agency Check with Inquiries (Tier 1) background check. Must be able to maintain ability to access government worksite. Must possess the ability to work in a high-volume office area and interface in a positive manner with co-workers and the customer. Must have and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate a company vehicle. Must have a safe driving record, as defined by Company policy, to operate a company vehicle.
