Operators are responsible for operating equipment on job sites, supervising and organizing ground crew who are working around equipment and performing inspections and daily maintenance of equipment. Minimum and Preferred Qualifications MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Sanitation Equipment Operator I: Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the tenth grade. High school diploma or equivalent is preferred. Minimum of two (2) years' related work experience is required. Sanitation Equipment Operator II: Internal applicants must have a minimum of two years' experience as a Sanitation Equipment Operator I with the City of Boca Raton, with cross training in the operations of side loader trucks. External applicants must have two (2) years of experience in the collection of residential solid waste, including operation of side-load, rear-load and flat-bed refuse collection trucks. Internal applicants must be able to pass a field test to demonstrate ability to operate side loader trucks. External applicants will be evaluated on the operations of rear-load, side-load, and flat-bed refuse collection trucks. External applicants will be hired into the Sanitation Operator I job classification. Upon successful completion of the field test, external applicants will be promoted to the Sanitation Equipment Operator II position. Sanitation Equipment Operator III: Internal applicants must have a minimum of two years' experience as a Sanitation Equipment Operator II with the City of Boca Raton, with cross training in the operations of grapple and front loader trucks. External applicants must have four (4) years of experience in the collection of residential solid waste, including operation of grapple load, side-load, front-load, rear-load and flat-bed refuse collection trucks. Internal applicants must be able to pass a field test to demonstrate ability to operate grapple and front loader trucks. External applicants will be evaluated on the operations of a grapple load, rear load, and flat-bed refuse collection trucks. External applicants will be hired into the Sanitation Operator II job classification. Upon successful completion of the field test, external applicants will be promoted to the Sanitation Equipment Operator III position. This position works under the general supervision of a Lift Station Operator II, inspecting and repairing 81 wastewater lift stations. Keeps detailed records and submits electronic and paper reports. Performs manual and semi-skilled work in a safe manner, requiring knowledge of specialized facets of underground utility maintenance or construction work as well as related work such as electrical, SCADA troubleshooting, wet well cleaning, pump and motor inspection, including the operation and maintenance of wastewater transmission mains. Operates various vehicles, cranes, motorized maintenance, and construction equipment. This Lean Six Sigma Utility continually strives to improve efficiency and work quality. This is an essential position; incumbent will be required to rotate "call duty" with an assigned operator II, and work extended hours during and after rain events, hurricanes or natural disasters and utility emergencies. Must possess a FL Class "C" certificate from FWPCOA in Wastewater Collection (or obtain within one year of hire) and a FL Class "B" CDL driver's license with air brakes and tanker endorsements at the time of application. Desired knowledge includes O.S.H.A. confined space training, experience operating motorized construction equipment, machine-shop equipment, electrical/electronics repairs, operating/maintaining wastewater pumping equipment, and radio telemetry (Dataflow SCADA system). Must be open to continual development by the successful completion of courses offered, such as safety, college, and technical training programs. Must be able to operate computers; hands-on testing of computer skills will be conducted. Testing will be conducted on GIS and paper reading as part of the interview process. Ability to work at moderate heights, as well as wet and dry wells of lift stations. The position requires regular work in confined spaces and the ability to use a safety harness. The noise level is moderate to high. Work environment: chemical fumes, dust, machinery hazards, and adverse outdoor weather conditions. Incumbents are required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as harnesses, hardhats, hearing protection, respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), as work place conditions mandate. Must be physically capable of using respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus; must pass a pulmonary function test. Applicants must not have facial hair that is in the area of the face seal of respiratory PPE. Physical abilities include walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, reaching, and climbing.
