Under immediate supervision, performs skilled services within the Municipal Services Department/ Collection System Maintenance Division, involving operating a variety of heavy construction and right-of-way equipment. Constructs, repairs, and maintains roads, sewers, fields and rights-of-way; performs traffic control duties; performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment. Operates snow removal equipment as required. Prepares logs and reports of work completed. Performs emergency services during non-business hours, as needed. Communicates with citizens and customers. Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or general education degree, and six (6) months' experience in the operation of light equipment or six (6) months as an Equipment Operator I. Must possess a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsements or if selected for position, obtain Class "B" Commercial Driver's License permit prior to first day of employment (if permit is obtained, the selected candidate must obtain the Class "B" Commercial Driver's License within the first six months of hire). Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Knowledge of preventive maintenance and minor repair procedures for construction and/or maintenance equipment; general construction safety rules and guidelines; and construction and/or maintenance equipment. Skilled in proper use of hand tools; proper operation of light equipment; and proper use and care of safety equipment. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively; to pass a competitive written examination; to read and interpret street and sewer system maps and layouts for job locations and assignments; and to follow oral and written instructions. May be called in to work overtime and standby during emergency conditions.
Physical Demands: Must be able to perform assigned tasks in all types of weather. Hearing and visual acuity required. Must be able to climb in and out of confined spaces. Must be able to shovel, dig, walk on uneven surfaces, stoop, bend and lift 75 lbs. (plus or minus 25 lbs). Requires hand/eye coordination to run equipment and machinery.
Typical Working Conditions: Typical wastewater and stormwater collection system and drainage environment, involving manholes, trenches, etc. Heavy work performed outdoors the majority of the time. Yard Maintenance: Maintain bulk yard organization by keeping materials properly stocked and removing debris or trash from the yard.
Equipment Upkeep: Perform routine maintenance on heavy equipment, such as cleaning, checking fluid levels, and reporting any mechanical issues.
Customer Service: Assist customers by safely loading their vehicles, providing guidance on product selection when needed, and ensuring a positive customer experience.
Follow Instructions: Carry out tasks as directed by supervisors, ensuring safety and efficiency in all operations.
Additional Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned to support yard operations and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
Qualifications:
Must prioritize safety in all aspects of the job.
Experience operating a front-end loader and skid steer is required.
Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
Strong customer service skills and a professional, friendly demeanor.
Ability to interact effectively with both customers and team members.
Must be available to work Fridays and Saturdays (7:30 AM - 5:00 PM).
