In 1987, the founder of the giant building supply company 84 Lumber, Joseph A. Hardy III, purchased a small country inn.
By 1987, the 400 acre complex consisting of one hotel and a nine hole golf course was in bankruptcy.

Nemacolin Woodlands Resort celebrated their 25th Anniversary in 2012.
On July 1, 2013, Isle of Capri Casinos opened Lady Luck Casino Nemacolin on the property, under a lease agreement with the resort.
In 2016, Joe transferred ownership of Nemacolin Wooflands to his daughter, Maggie Hardy-Magerko, who is the owner of Nemacolin Woodlands Resort and 84 Lumber Company.
As a member of Historic Hotels of America (since 2018), The Lodge and Nemacolin are among the best holiday destinations in the United States.
