    Plays a musical instrument and/or its related double in the Hawai`i County or West Hawai`i band at public performances; and performs other related duties as assigned. This is an advanced level in the Musician series and plays at the level five (5) proficiency and must be able to perform on multiple parts within the section including solo parts. There is one (1) immediate permanent part-time vacancy with the Hawai'i County Band in Hilo for Alto Saxophone or Clarinet. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment. Special Working Conditions: Works irregular hours: Must be able to work Tuesday and Thursday evenings for rehearsals, weekends and holidays for performances; average of 18 hours per month. Must be physically able to march in parades, including inclement weather. Examples of Duties Plays all musical parts for a musical instrument and/or its related double in band performances and in accompaniment to featured singing, dancing, or instrumental solos. Performs occasional solos and ensembles within and in front of the band. Participates in concerts, parades, and other regular and special engagements of the band. Participates in full band rehearsals, sectionals, or small group rehearsals, including marching practice. Warms up, warms down, tunes up, sets up, and breaks down all equipment. Studies musical scores and memorizes parts. Cares for and maintains music folders in an orderly fashion. Transports personal instrument(s) and equipment to and from rehearsals; cares for and maintains instrument(s) and equipment. May perform other special assignments incidentally, i.e., section leader or featured soloist. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualification Requirements Training and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to: graduation from high school, and applicants shall have experience playing in a concert band or orchestra or in a musical group over a six year period. Note: Applicants will be required to audition before the County auditioning committee. Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application. Services may include funerals, weddings, Quinceaneras, Holy Days, and Sunday Masses. Additionally, at various times throughout the year there may be a requirement for solo instrumental pieces, such as during the offertory. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1) Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the Diocese by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Jewelry should be appropriate to the dignity of the Mass and other liturgies, and never be a distraction. Physical/Mental Requirements: Requires coordination and manual dexterity, regular mental and visual ability; ability to lift as required in a normal church environment. Required Activities: Walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, talking, handling, hearing, carrying, and playing keyboard music. Basic Qualifications: Possess a working knowledge of, and a strong commitment to the mission of the Catholic Church. Must be a practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church.
