The Medical Technologist performs laboratory tests to aid in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Assists in the collection, processing, and analysis of test ordered by a physician. Medical Technologists can recognize interdependency of tests and have knowledge of physiological conditions affecting test results which are used by the physician to determine the presence, extent and possible the cause of disease.
Responsibilities:
1. Utilizes independent judgment in performing both routine and complex laboratory tests using a variety of techniques, instrumentation, and equipment in order to assist the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
2. Exercises professional judgment in order to prioritize and evaluate varying test requests efficiently.
3. Follow procedures for collecting and processing Biological specimens.
4. Performs analytical testing procedures with accuracy and precision.
5. Demonstrates scientific knowledge of testing principles, analytic procedures, and their results allowing for appropriate interpretation in conjunction with disease and physiology. Integrates multiple data to resolve problems.
6. Implements and monitors quality control, new equipment, and/or methods.
7. Performs tasks efficiently and maintains work area.
8. Participates in education efforts of the department.
9. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care for the physical, psych/ social, educational, and safety needs of the patients served regardless of age.
10. Other duties as required.

Technical Expertise
1. Prior work experience in a clinical laboratory setting including recent experience in multiple laboratory disciplines is preferred.
2. Experience working with all levels within an organization is required.
3. Experience in healthcare is preferred.
4. Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.

1. Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or other science, with successful completion of an internship in Medical Technology or equivalent experience in a laboratory as deemed appropriate by ASCP and CLIA criteria required
2. Certification: Certification or eligibility for certification by ASCP at the Technologist level or grandfather at the Technologist level prior to 2004 is required. Certification obtained within 12 months from the start date in the position is required.

Records daily temperatures of cryostat.

Example of Duties
Clinical Lab Tech II
Performs and instructs medical laboratory procedures established by the Chief of Clinical Laboratories including general hematology, general bacteriology, general parasitology, general chemistry, and general serology.
Assists the lab director with inventory control, records management, special report generation and scheduling.
Performs and helps supervise venipunctures.
Performs and helps supervise blood counts and differentials.
Performs and helps supervise clinical chemistry.
Performs and helps supervise complete urinalysis.
Performs serologist tests and aids in their supervision, such as RPR, VDRL, monospor, and FTA. Checks stool specimens for ova and parasites
Helps supervise the reading and recording of all types of bacterial cultures diagnosed in the laboratory and perform proper sensitivity tests with known antibiotics according to procedures set up by Kirby and Bauer.
Performs and helps supervise all necessary medical laboratory tests set up by the Chief of Clinical Laboratories.
Keeps quality control records on all tests performed within the laboratory. Maintains daily and monthly log sheets and reports the number of tests performed. Performs other job-related duties as required.
Substitution: Associates Degree with Certification as a Medical Lab Technician or Medical Technologist may substituted for Bachelor's degree
Six months full time paid experience in preparing samples and operating analytical instruments in a lab is required.
Must be proficient in phlebotomy
Must have a valid state of Ohio driver's license and properly registered and insured vehicle for use.

Preferred Requirements: Prior experience working in clinical lab setting, particularly reproductive health, STI and HIV preferred.

The Cleveland Department of Public Health is a longstanding Title X provider offering comprehensive family planning service to men, women and teens. We provide reproductive health services in the Departments J. Glen Smith and McCafferty Health Centers. Lab services are central to the work services that we offer: pregnancy, STI and HIV testing along with traditional clinical lab services. Our walk in lab enhances our capacity to provide same day service.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED/ADDITIONAL DUTIES
Working at least three (3) months as a phlebotomist and/or generalist in a clinical laboratory.
Demonstrated capacity to work as part of a clinical team.
Strong organizational skills
Ability to meet deadlines and manage work in a busy clinic setting
Extensive knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
