Team dynamics and professional development. * * *JOB SUMMARY* The Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NM Tech), under general supervision of a Radiologist, performs nuclear medicine procedures, PET, and theranostic procedures on ambulatory and hospital patients as requested by a physician or other licensed provider for the diagnosis of disease and injury in accordance with established protocols. *ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE ROLE* Quality Assurance: Performs high quality nuclear medicine, PET, and theranostic procedures (planar, SPECT, and SPECT/CT), according to exam protocol, in a timely manner. Systematically evaluates the quality of imaging procedures and follows established standards and procedures. Maintains equipment by performing quality control (Q.C.) as required by imaging manufacturers, radiation materials license (RAM), or American College of Radiology (ACR). Works with engineers and physicists to ensure optimal operational capabilities of equipment. Caring Practices: Communicates with patients to identify patient service requirements, ensure correct exam is performed, and establish rapport with patients and others. Instructs and communicates with patients and their family, in accordance with HIPAA, regarding the test to be performed and assesses patient's ability to tolerate exam. Patient Safety: Explains the procedure thoroughly to put patients at ease. Protects patients and team members by adhering to safety requirements, infection-control, protocols, and techniques. Prepares patient and area for procedure by positioning patient, adjusting immobilization devices, moving equipment into specified position. Uses proper aseptic or sterile techniques as needed when setting up and performing invasive procedures and maintains hand hygiene requirements. Radiation Safety: Safeguards patients, team members, and themselves by adhering to all radiation safety requirements, policies, protocols and techniques. Verifies that correct radioactive drug has been selected for the exam or treatment. Screens patients appropriately for pregnancy status prior to the start of the exam or treatment. Safely administers radiopharmaceuticals and adjunctive medications per protocol. Educates patients with radiation safety techniques pre and post exam or treatment. Safely follows radiation disposal guidelines. Collaboration: Reports issues to leadership or appropriate department. Assists the department in maintaining supplies inventory, ordering radiopharmaceuticals for patient care and Q.C. Works collaboratively with colleagues, nursing partners, medical staff, and Radiologists. Ensures an accurate transfer of patient images to the BSWH picture archiving and communication system (PACS) for clinical review and dictation by our physician partners. *KEY SUCCESS FACTORS* Ability to observe changes in the medical condition of patients and effectively communicate changes to nursing partners, physicians, and emergency response teams as needed; with ability to administer first aid and use the emergency cart. Darnall Army Medical Center 36065 Santa Fe Ave Fort Cavazos, TX 76544 Schedule: Provide services for work weeks averaging 40 workhours or may consists of an average of five (5) eight (8) work-hour days, Sunday through Saturday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. Possible shifts include the following: 0730-1600 w/30 min lunch 0730-1630 w/1-hr lunch Blood Drives require longer workdays, up to 12-hour days; in these cases, you will be scheduled to work during the peak work hours and be transported back to the donor center or lodging site as to not exceed the 40-hour work week. Hours scheduled for shifts do not include travel time involved in reaching the Blood Donor Center. Shall be rested and fully physically and mentally capable for performing the duties required under this contract. May be required to work in a different department/or clinic of the hospital. Compensatory time (comp time) is not authorized. Blood Drives & Travel: The Government will provide transportation to and from blood drives scheduled at any location outside of the 40-mile radius from assigned blood donor center. During periods in which the blood drives require contractor travel to and from the blood drive site, the travel time will count as paid time and the number of hours remaining for the work week will be reduced accordingly in order to meet the 40-hour work schedule. Blood donor centers routinely conduct blood drives at locations which require travel, with some requiring overnight stays. If two blood drives are scheduled at the same location (which requires travel and overnight stays) and have a day separating the two drives, that day will be counted as administrative time. All blood drive locations are on federal owned or leased property. Most of the blood drives are during the day. Blood drives are generally not scheduled before 8:00 a.m. unless however successful completion of quality control tests is conducted prior to the blood drive. Local blood drives are generally scheduled at least two months in advance. Mobile drives are posted at least two or three months in advance. May be required to participate in blood drives in locations other than Fort Cavazos, TX. The Government will notify the MLT as far in advance as possible so that sufficient time is available for the MLT to obtain the best travel rates. Duties: Rotates through various sections of the Blood Donor Center, to include: Registration, Interview/Vitals, Bag Issue and Phlebotomy (whole blood and regular collections). Independently performs standardized clinical laboratory tests and procedures appropriate to blood banking. The majority of work performed is covered in established standard operating procedure (SOP) and instructions, though occasionally will perform more complex procedures which are not covered in detail by existing documents. Provides assistance during mobile blood drives to setup, break down, load and unload supplies. Assists with training new staff, students and Military personnel in all aspects of the blood donation process. Maintains a professional attitude and communicates effectively with donors, patients, physicians, and fellow employees. Performs personal interviews to obtain medical histories and visual inspections of blood donors, ensuring donors meet all Food and Drug Administration (FDA) criteria and current manufacturing practices. Determines eligibility of potential donors based on judgment and in accordance with SOP and regulatory guidelines. Screens subjects donating blood (e.g., volunteer blood donors, autologous and therapeutic patients) and exercises care to ensure their blood is at a safe level prior to being used. Takes vital signs (i.e., temperature, pulse, and blood pressure) and checks hemoglobin and/or hematocrit levels, ensuring prospective donors are eligible to donate blood. Strips, segments, weighs, and stores whole blood units. Records information, such as time of started and stopped drawing blood. Prepares samples to be sent to testing laboratory. Receives and reviews test results, ensuring proper procedures are followed if irregularities or tests discrepancies are found. Enters results into the computer system to update the files of blood donors and follow up log for serological testing of blood donor units. Phlebotomy duties Apheresis procedures Perform a full range of clinical laboratory tests in any one or a combination of the following sections of the laboratory: hematology and blood bank. COMPENSATION: $27.72 per hour plus an additional $4.57 per hour for Health & Welfare DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Is expected to use independent technical judgment to analyze and interpret laboratory results Will perform, evaluate, interpret, correlate, and validate the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results Requires a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision Will be required to monitor quality control systems and measures Requires the ability to interpret and apply complex written instructions Must utilize basic knowledge of laboratory equipment and be able to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation May need to resolve problems encountered in the laboratory Must be able to communicate, consult, and interact with other members of the healthcare team, external relations, customer service, and patient education Will perform a broad range of laboratory procedures, including advanced and complex laboratory procedures. Must be able to recognize deviation from expected results and use scientific principles to analyze and correct problems Evaluate and solve problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis accounting for physiologic processes and requirements Maintain and document the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Use, calibrate, and identify malfunctions; repair and perform preventive maintenance of laboratory equipment Troubleshoot issues with laboratory instruments and resolve problems. Diagnose deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction Perform and document quality control and quality assurance activities and corrective actions related to test performance using statistical principles and theories of performance improvement Identify discrepancies, solve problems, and present solutions Answer inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity, test sensitivity, and specific factors that influence test results.
