Senior Legal Services (SLS) is a joint program of The Bar Association of Baltimore City and the Baltimore Bar Foundation. SLS provides vital pro bono legal services to low-income seniors (aged 60 and over) in Baltimore City. Our mission is to empower older adults to age in place and thrive in their community by offering free legal assistance in estate planning, consumer protection, housing disputes, foreclosure prevention, probate, guardianship, and elder abuse cases.
Job Description
SLS seeks a full-time Staff Attorney to provide high-quality legal services to Baltimore City seniors, particularly those facing legal challenges that threaten their housing, financial security, and overall well-being. This position offers a meaningful opportunity to protect seniors from exploitation and advocate for their legal rights.
Key Responsibilities
Provide direct legal services including legal advice, brief assistance, and representation in civil legal matters such as:
Estate Planning & Administration (wills, powers of attorney, advance directives)
Housing Issues (evictions, property tax sales, foreclosure prevention)
Consumer Protection (debt collection defense, fraud prevention)
Elder Justice Cases (financial exploitation, neglect, abuse)
Conduct “Know Your Rights” presentations at senior centers, assisted living communities, and other community-based locations.
Maintain and strengthen relationships with community partners, government agencies, and referral organizations.
Desired Qualifications
Familiarity with legal basics in Baltimore City landlord/tenant law, estate planning, peace/protective orders, and civil procedure (especially in District Court).
Strong research, writing, and advocacy skills.
Ability to effectively communicate complex legal issues to seniors and other community members.
Experience working with indigent populations or in public interest law.
Demonstrated commitment to pro bono or nonprofit legal work.
Must be licensed to practice law in Maryland.
Ability to travel to community outreach locations within Baltimore City.
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $67,800 to $85,000 per year
Paid Time Off:
12 paid holidays per year (plus General Election Day when applicable)
1 week of paid vacation after six months (increases to 2 weeks after one year)

Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include:
Knowledge Strategy:
Lead the development, implementation and communication of the knowledge strategy for the groups, working closely with the practice groups and Regional Head of Knowledge to ensure progress as against those strategic priorities.
Identify and drive efficiencies within the group's practice of law, e.g., explore and pilot relevant legal technology/AI products, assist with legal process improvement to improve the group's ability to service its clients efficiently and in a cost-effective manner.
Be a visible and active driver of a "knowledge-first" culture within the groups and promote the sharing and dissemination of know-how within the team.
Represent the practice groups in global, firm-wide knowledge projects and initiatives as and when required.
Current Awareness and Thought Leadership:
Identify, draft and coordinate the development of high-value thought leadership publications.
Identify key legal developments and “hot topics” that provide an opportunity to showcase the firm's experience and insight via client alerts, pitches, directory and award submissions, webinars, seminars, article submissions, opportunities to pitch to the press and other client-facing collateral; provide the legal research and legal technical content needed to produce such products.
Research, monitor, analyze and report to the groups on legal, market and industry developments and trends, considering how they will affect the group's practice and its clients.
Assist with the groups' efforts to find innovative ways of using its knowledge to add value to key client relationships by providing timely material to facilitate frequent interactions with clients.
Help the groups to develop new legal products, identify possible new services and innovative and efficient ways of working.
Legal Knowledge:
Lead the collection, drafting, maintenance, automation and updating the group knowledge, driving, specifically, the development of a comprehensive, best-in-class library of model documents across the Biotechnology practice groups.
Strengthen pathways to collect and curate the groups' highest-value legal knowledge, ensuring that the groups' knowledge repositories surface consistent, relevant, high-quality starting points for all lawyers.
Develop training materials for internal and external clients, by drafting, delivering and capturing training on different substantive areas of the three practice groups.
Legal Training:
Develop, implement and deliver training to associates, partners and external clients within the health, pharmaceuticals & biotechnology and medical device areas and on core topics.
Devise and implement training strategy for the groups to support future needs; arrange for associates and partners and third parties to develop and deliver courses.
Relationship Building:
Lawyers
Develop relationships with lawyers who have experience relevant to the groups and facilitate the sharing of quality knowledge and experience.
Respond to queries from lawyers and track queries to identify knowledge and training needs.
Introduce lawyers joining a group to the group's knowledge resources.
Firm wide Community
Coordinate with other Knowledge Lawyers supporting other practice/industry sector groups, sharing knowledge and best practices and encouraging the alignment of the groups' knowledge plans with those of other groups.
Participate in knowledge community initiatives.
Follow and encourage global practices and standards.
Help to establish a knowledge sharing culture within the firm and the groups.
Develop and promote the firm's knowledge systems and processes within the groups and liaise with lawyers to gather feedback.

Experience Required

Candidates must have a J.D. with strong academic credentials and be admitted to the D.C. Bar or bar of any state in which we have an office. We expect the Knowledge Lawyer to work 40 hours per week, some of which could be working remotely, but he or she should have the flexibility to work additional hours as needed.

The Director & Counsel is responsible for providing practical, timely, strategic, and high-quality legal advice on U.S. privacy and data matters across the organization on a broad range of matters. Examples of what you will do in this role:
* Advise B2C and B2B businesses with day-to-day data protection and privacy queries across the U.S. region, including across nascent and developing areas.
* Provide guidance for new product launches, strategic initiatives, and practical risk mitigation strategies.
* Support digital advertising initiatives by advising on data use/disclosure issues and leading strategic negotiations with media companies.
* Draft and negotiate commercial agreements relating to data protection and privacy, including co-brand and business partner agreements and data processing agreements.
