Organizes and coordinates flow of information. Sorts, reads and annotates incoming mail and documents as required. Answers phones and directs callers to appropriate persons as circumstances warrant. Receives and assists visitors.
Types and composes general correspondence, memos, legal documents, faxes, reports, etc. from various sources. Prepares communications outlined by lawyer in oral or written directions. Responsible for accuracy and clarity of final copy. Correlates and edits materials submitted by others. Organizes material that may be presented to lawyers in draft format. Ensures that all correspondence or other documentation is dispatched in a timely manner (via mail, messenger, express delivery services, etc.)
Prepares draft pleadings such as briefs, complaints, motions, subpoenas, summonses, using firm templates and information from attorneys. Prepares motion binders and special working binders. Coordinates multi-document filings in both state and federal courts, including E-filings.
Establishes and maintains filing and records, in both hard copy and electronic formats. Files information in a timely manner. Retrieves information from files as requested. Sends files to storage on a periodic basis. Updates subscription books as required.
Enters lawyers' time on a daily basis and sends to accounting by month-end deadlines. Prepares client billing as required.
Researches and abstracts information and support data in preparation for meetings, work projects, and reports.
Creates and maintains up-to-date desk manual on specific instructions and responsibilities for the secretarial team.
Takes action authorized by Lawyer and Director of Administration using initiative and good judgment in handling matters.
Notifies Director of Administration about availability to assist with overflow work.
Timely and regular attendance.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
High school diploma is required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Two years of prior legal experience.

Deputy Public Defender I
• Interviews applicants for public defense and determines financial eligibility; advises and counsels defendants on legal rights and procedures.
• Investigates, researches, and prepares cases for the defense; presents and defends cases in the Justice, Municipal, and Superior Courts.

• When warranted, argues the merits of probation for defendants; prepares appeals, writs, and other legal documents on behalf of defendants; dictates correspondence and prepares reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER ILicense/Certificate: Active membership in the State Bar of California. DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER IIOption IExperience: One year of experience at the Deputy I level with the Public Defender's Office of Riverside County (Certification of qualifications by the Public Defender may be substituted for up to six months of the required experience). Option IIExperience: One year of experience at the Deputy I level with another office of Riverside County or as an attorney at an equivalent level with another California county or city. Option IIIExperience: One year of experience in the practice of criminal and/or civil law; civil law experience must have included primary involvement in the following areas: Conservatorships, Probate, Guardianships or other closely related cases. DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER IIIOption IExperience: One year of experience at the Deputy II level with the Public Defender's Office of Riverside County, at the Deputy II level with another office of Riverside County, or as an attorney at an equivalent level with another California county or city. The Directing Attorney is a unique leadership opportunity for an attorney committed to community-centered advocacy to lead a team providing services to marginalized rural communities. The Directing Attorney is responsible for developing the office's advocacy vision and tone and leading their team of Staff Attorneys, Community Workers, and legal support team members in delivering high-quality legal services commensurate with that vision. The Directing Attorney has substantive command of at least one of CRLA's Priority Advocacy areas and is responsible for maintaining their caseload in addition to their leadership role.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise and guide staff attorneys' litigation and other advocacy work, including assessing legal needs and reviewing and editing litigation-related documents. The Directing Attorney ensures that case handling complies with CRLA policies, Legal Services Corporation regulations, the ABA Standards for the Provision of Civil Legal Services, and ethical obligations.
Maintain an active caseload of both affirmative and defensive in-court and administrative litigation.
Develop and execute the annualized office work plan. The work plan serves as a blueprint for office change advocacy and sets out a results-oriented program that blends various advocacy approaches to impact change locally, nationally, and statewide.
Convene the local office advisory committee and work with them to identify opportunities for change advocacy.
Conduct weekly staff meetings and case reviews to assess new intakes' eligibility and the level of service to be provided. Responsible for ensuring all cases progress as planned and are closed on time.
Manage, train, provide guidance and evaluate office staff performance.
Oversee the planning of community education and outreach activities to raise awareness of diverse advocacy areas in local communities.
As needed, work with the Development and Finance teams to evaluate grant opportunities. Understand, monitor, and deliver grant deliverables and necessary outcomes, including timekeeping and other LSC requirements.
Proactively source intern candidates. Oversee intern project assignments to ensure a successful learning experience. Similarly, orient, develop and supervise pro-bono attorneys and volunteers.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of three (3) years experience practicing law, preferably in the CRLA Priority areas of housing, employment, education, rural health, or similar
Minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience and/or proven ability to organize and supervise the casework and advocacy of team members
Demonstrated ability to interact constructively with diverse populations and team members
Demonstration of commitment to working with low-income, marginalized and diverse populations
HIGHLY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Admitted to the California Bar
Fluency in another language, most specifically, Spanish
Experience in the non-profit or public sectors
Experience in obtaining grants and managing them through to completion.
